Book Description

June 30, 2005
It is rare that a direct disciple of a master of yoga shares an intimate account of that relationship and describes the psychological and spiritual transformations that can occur. In this informative book the reader is introduced to a realm of experience and knowledge that is not ordinarily accessible.

More About the Author

Roy Eugene Davis was born in 1931 in Leavittsburg, Ohio, approximately 40 miles south of Cleveland, and grew up in a farming community. In his early teenage years he frequented the public library, reading books on psychology, philosophy, and yoga. When he was 18 years of age, he read Paramahansa Yogananda's Autobiography of a Yogi and immediately sensed a spiritual connection with Yogananda and the kriya yoga tradition. In December 1949, he traveled to Los Angeles, California, to meet his guru (teacher) and was accepted for monastic discipleship training.

Mr. Davis was ordained by Paramahansa Yogananda in 1951 and was appointed as the minister of the Phoenix, Arizona, Self-Realization Fellowship Center in March 1952. In late 1953, aware of a need to learn to live effectively in the secular world, he withdrew from the organization--but not from his relationship with the kriya yoga tradition or his commitment to serve. After 2 years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps at Fort Riley, Kansas, he began his mission as an independent teacher. Since then, he has taught in more than 100 cities in North America and in Japan, Brazil, Europe, West Africa, and India.

Some of his books are published in 10 languages and in 11 countries. He is also the publisher of Truth Journal magazine and writes monthly lessons for CSA members around the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Rememberance, April 25, 2009

This review is from: Paramahansa Yogananda As I Knew Him: Experiences, Observations, And Reflections of a Disciple (Hardcover)
Roy Eugene Davis provides a brief overview of his two or so years as a student of Paramahansa Yogananda, as well as the beginnings of his own ministry and some basic Q&A on the teachings of Yogananda. It's probably best to have read Autobiography of a Yogi first, and in comparison, it is a pretty light read. However, if you are looking at following one of the several offshoots of Yogananda's SRF, this will help you understand the alternatives and the basic teachings.

2.0 out of 5 stars Light Weight, January 2, 2010
This review is from: Paramahansa Yogananda As I Knew Him: Experiences, Observations, And Reflections of a Disciple (Hardcover)
Roy Eugene Davis was briefly in Paramahansa Yogananda's monastic order in the early 1950's, but left to pursue his own ministry. This book is very sparse on memoirs of Yogananda, attesting to the infrequency of Davis's actual encounters with the Great Master. In order to fill out the book, most of it is just his analysis of the tenants of Hinduism and the form of religious practice that Yogananda taught. Davis is completely contrary to the current teachings of Yogananda's organization, Self Realization Fellowship in very crucial ways. One, he states that Yogananda cannot be anyones' guru, now that he has left his body. SRF teaches that Yogananda can be a person's guru and that his absence from the body makes no difference - Yogananda also confirmed this when in the body, that it makes no difference. Also, Davis thinks he is the "guru-successor" to Yogananda - a pretentious and arrogant misconception that discredits him completely. There are far more qualified people who could claim that title, but do not, for they are more humble and aware.

Read "The Flawless Mirror" by Kamala Silva; "The Trilogy of Love" by Durga Mata; "The Path" by Donald Walters or any of several books by Daya Mata of the Self Realization Fellowship for a much more detailed and accurate account of Yogananda and his teachings. Roy Eugene Davis's book is not worth the time.
