This textbook teaches the basic principles of mathematics and applies these principles to cases that paramedics face on the job. Chapters cover math rules and principles; fractions, decimals, and percentages; ratios, proportions, and conversion factors; and rate-dependent and weight-based calculations. Practice problems are scattered throughout the chapters; students practice as they go. Every chapter highlights how paramedics can make use of the math knowledge that they already have in order to solve more complicated problems. Chapters begin with the simple and obvious, and progress to the level used in the field. Practice makes perfect this text has over 700 practice problems! In addition to the in-chapter practice, chapters conclude with more problems. Complete answers to every problem, including explanations, are provided in the answer key. Every step is included, making it easy to follow how an answer was reached.
I began my EMS career in Rockville Md. just after high school in 1985. I achived my EMT-A and volunteered for the New Market/Green Acres Vol. Fire Department in Frederick County, Md. for 6 years. I have always been interested in prehospital care since the days of "Emergency". I used to watch that show growing up and always wanted to be like Roy & Johnny.
After sitting on the sidelines of prehospial care for many years decided I needed to return to the field, so I enrolled in an EMT-B course at FMTI in Coconut Creek, Florida and started working for a private ambulance service as a driver only employee. After graduating class and taking the National Registry exam I became a Nationally Registered EMT-B. So began my return to the field I loved so much.
My next hurdle was to continue and pass Paramedic class while also working as a new NREMT-B. After taking the State of Florida Paramedic test and passing it I became a Paramedic.
A few months later my employer promoted me to a Critical Care Paramedic and with in a year I became a Field Training Officer. About that time I contacted Jones & Bartlett about helping them to complete a book about Drug Calculations for the beginning, intermedate or advanced paramedic. They gave me my chance to show what I had and "Paramedic: Calculations for Drug Administration" was born. It is my first attempt to reach out to others and help them get through the gut wrenching...ok maybe not gut wrenching, but definately difficult task of doing drug calculations in the field. I hope you like it and I hope it helps you. By all mean drop me a note and let me know what you think.
