2.0 out of 5 stars They forgot to make this one scary October 26, 2012
Format:Blu-ray
A big fan of this series (my name even gets a fan credit in #1!), I thought the trailer for PA4 was awful. And the "viral campaign" never took off like it did for #2 and #3. It was as if even those involved simply weren't very committed/interested in the film they were making.

The reviews were ALL tepid--even those that sort of praised it--and word of mouth was dismal. The "actual people watching the film" TV ad was so over-the-top, it became a joke.

And then the film itself was a mess. Why have the wink-wink "in jokes" of the kid riding the bike like THE SHINING? It takes us "out" of the movie we're watching...and ads zero to the film. Same with the first
fake" drag scene of the girl. Again, why remind us that we're watching a movie, why take us out of the experience?

And NOTHING happens for so long into this movie, it's just people talking and talking and talking. The few little scares are already shown in the trailer, which they have done before...but those are the ONLY scares! So we are not surprised.

And it's clear that the writers/directors had no real ideas of what Toby was to do this time. In other words, WHY does he levitate the girl? If the goal is to kill everyone, that just do it. The levitation scene is simply to impress US, the viewers. But we've seen that before, in a dozen films...and in the trailer! So there is no shock or surprise. And why bounce the ball down the stairs? And why is there scene after scene in the dark with the xBox? Toby is "better" than moving some dots around but they feature that xBox feature into the ground.

Finally, the ending (no spoiler, if you've seen PA3)...is the SAME ending as PA3. We learn nothing. In fact, you can remove PA4 and you've learned NOTHING.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Weakest Entry Yet October 20, 2012
Format:DVD
Paranormal Activity has become the "Police Academy" of horror films, with a sequel each year targeted at a particular type of audience, with a similar plot and familiar characters each time out. This year, the pickings are very slim, as this is by far the worst film of the four. Scares are few and far between, the acting is terrible, and the film is ALMOST IDENTICAL to Paranormal Activity 2, with the same exact ending as Paranormal 3.

With a budget this big and a devoted audience, it is an insult to the integrity and to the intelligence of the loyal fans to put out a lackluster film such as this. They have obviously run out of ideas and are already rehashing the same scenes over and over again. Unless you are a huge fan of the franchise, don't seethis film. Not only are the first three better, but they are almost identical.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not enough happens in this one. February 24, 2013
Format:DVD
Unlike many other so-called horror movie fans, I actually like the Paranormal Activity franchise. However, "Paranormal Activity 4" really isn't very good at all. Like the other three before it, "Paranormal Activity 4" does have a degree of suspense and atmosphere, but not nearly as much as the other three before it, and it definitely shows in the finished product. I would compare this one to "Paranormal Activity 2", but it's not as good. In fact, I would say that "Paranormal Activity", "Paranormal Activity 3", "Paranormal Activity 2" and then "Paranormal Activity 4" are the rankings from best to worst.

With that being said, this review shall focus on the pros and cons of "Paranormal Activity 4" but will also make comparisons to the original "Paranormal Activity" in an attempt to show how this particular entry was very slow to develop causing it to suffer in its ability to create horror. Indeed, this movie lacks the suspense, atmosphere and mystery of the entries that came before it.

"Paranormal Activity 4" is about what happened to Katie and Hunter Rey after Katie (possessed by a demon) had kidnapped the child. The movie picks up with a new family including a teenaged girl, Ellen, and her little brother, Wyatt. I would submit that this particular movie focuses too much on the teenage girl and her boyfriend, Ben, and this creates a lot of silly scenes that works against the horror the film is trying to generate. These fillers scenes take away from the film and the result is most definitely way too much boring scenes where nothing important happens in this entry to the point where the movie gets bogged down and becomes downright boring.

Who knew it was so easy to spot a ghost? The last I knew those knuckleheads on Ghost Hunters Uber-Global have yet to definitely catch so much as the shadow of a legitimate spectre on tap - EVPs not included - but these PARANORMAL ACTIVITY folks just have the spirits popping up left and right. Granted, maybe they're not all demons - at this juncture, who can tell? Still, if you're looking for some harmless fun and equally harmless scares, this is probably the `found footage' franchise for you. It's certainly blossomed into its own cottage industry, that's for sure.

(NOTE: The following review may contain minor spoilers necessary solely for the discussion of character and plot. If you're the kind of reader who prefers a review entirely spoiler-free, then I'd encourage you to skip down to the last paragraph for my final assessment. If, however, you're accepting of a few modest hints at `things to come,' then read on ...)

Katie (the lovely Katie Featherston) was last seen - in PARANORMAL ACTIVITY time - five years ago, the night she vamoosed with her nephew, Hunter. In this fourth installment, she's taken up residence across the street from the average American family, and (wouldn't you know it?) she and her would-be son are about to turn up the heat on Alex (played with solid charm by easy-on-the-eyes newcomer Kathryn Newton), Wyatt - or is he? - (Aiden Lovekamp), and her feuding parents, Doug (Stephen Dunham) and Holly (Alexondra Lee).

Does anyone ever make it out alive of these pictures?!?!

Let me be frank, movie lovers: despite what you might think of these PARANORMAL pictures, they're a veritable goldmine for the folks behind them. With an average budget of $5 million, this fourth episode grossed over $50 million in the US alone.

Worst of them all. There was no plot nor climax and the ending was thrown together and made no sense at all

2.0 out of 5 stars Waste of time.
I'm not a huge proponent of the Paranormal Activity movies, but I will say this: usually, they manage to work around the fact that they're found footage films and turn out okay. Read more

They should have stopped at number 2. This movie was just a bad joke. There was no purpose for this movie. Honestly just sad
