This is an excellent level headed book. It introduces psychological insight into paranormal and mystical phenomena. He offers a Psychological perspective, But the author doesn't force any opinions on you. There are many exercises related to the different chapters to experiment with also.

The Psychology of Transcendence (first edition: Prentice-Hall, 1980) (New York: Dover Publications, Inc., 1990) 398 pages (Library of Congress call number: BF1031.N43 1990) A critical examination of paranormal experiences: religious visions, ESP, psychokinesis; faith healing; auras; ghosts, mediums; out-of-the-body experiences; astrology; UFOs; & the Bermuda Triangle. A balanced account--attempting to find some value in these beliefs while maintaining a scientific approach. Because Neher presents each phenomenon briefly, this might be a good place to start one's study of the paranormal. There are nearly 900 references in the back, showing that the author has done comprehensive research. If you would like to find similar books critical of paranormal claims, search the Internet for the following expression: "OCCULTISM AND SCIENCE". James Leonard Park, skeptic.
