This is a "history of ideas" account of the retreat of magical thinking in Europe before the rise of the modern scientific world view. It examines the challenge to this view presented by the physical researchers of the 19th century employing scientific methods and criteria.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very worthwhile, December 26, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Parapsychology: A Concise History (Paperback)
Beloff is one of the leading proponents of mind-body dualism (i.e., the theory that mind may exist independent of the body) and has had a long and distinguished career. If you aren't familiar with him, check out his own website. He is a serious academic and this is a serious work aimed at general readers. It is a short but excellent survey of parapsychology from a sympathetic point of view, and I found it very worthwhile even though I have read widely in this field.
