Parashah Plays is a new collection of 54 self-contained, original plays, each representing a single parashah of the Torah. The plays are primarily written for younger children (Grades K-6), but the humor and content can be enjoyed on a variety of levels by people of all ages. Each play is constructed with a unique dramatic format, chosen to reflect the tone and message of that weeks's parashah. The plays are each about 15 minutes in length, and bring to life familiar characters from the Torah, using contemporary language to play out their conflicts and dilemmas in colorful, comedic fashion. Although the dialogue is contemporary, with a focus on humor and fun, the actual biblical events are depicted with attention to accuracy, making Parashah Plays an excellent tool for educating, entertaining, and inspiring.

Richard J. Allen received his M.F.A. in playwriting from Indiana University, where his one act play "The Wooing of Miriam Cohen" won a 1981 award from the American College Theatre Festival. He resides in Fort Worth, Texas, and is Associate Professor of Radio-TV-Film at TCU. He is also currently Associate Writer for "As the World Turns" (CBS). Other soap opera writing credits include head writer of "Days of Our Lives," "Another World," "One Life to Live," "and "General Hospital." His comedy "The Man Who Killed Rock Monnenoff" was presented at Marietta, Georgia's Theatre-on-the-Square in 1989. His teleplay "Big Shots" which starred Ed Asner, Bonnie Franklin, and Steve Landesberg, aired in 1997 on the Jewish Television Network and on PBS in South Florida.

I have seen many of these plays performed and they are a delight. They provide opportunities for many young actors and require little support. Richard Allen's skill and wit make them easily accessible to children while entertaining the grown-ups sure to be present in the audience. Helps participants grasp Torah concepts while working--and laughing--with friends and classmates.

I have seen these plays performed by children and they are a delight! They illustrate lessons from the Torah clearly, with a terrific sense of humor. Lots of laughs (and some painfully familiar lessons) for the adults who are sure to be in the audience, too!
