A combat veteran leads a rag-tag group of survivors in an all-out war against invading aliens! The world's cities have been destroyed by a ghastly holocaust from space. The few remaining souls eke out an existence in the ruins, ransacking skyscrapers for food, and living in the city's sewers like vermin. Alex Ward, a man who has lost everything, and a beautiful woman named Jo, unite the survivors to battle the slithering menace of the Colloids, parasites whose seed has drifted through space for millions of years in search of the perfect world for their depredations---Earth! This review is from: The Parasite War (Kindle Edition)
I picked this book up on a whim and was initially very pleased with the opening. It starts off with great action and the author is excellent with his discriptive text. His premise and concept are great and it's easy for the reader to get drawn into the story. Unfortunately, this apocalyptic novel about an alien parasite infection suffers from a blatant lack of simple research. Examples of this are evident in the simplest areas such as when the survivors break into a National Guard armory and the vehicles described are "jeeps", which haven't been used by the NG or the Reserves since the '70s. The author glosses over a lot of things which become to glaring to ignore; like stating many times how the alien Coloids are destroyed by water yet they feed on humans - which are 98% water! He describes the protagonist as having been in the Iragi war in Faluja and states he was a Marine, then later says he was in the National Guard (which isn't and has never been part if the Marines) then mentions that he was in the Army. I won't even get into the errors he makes with the weapons the survivors use (Note: an RPG is NOT a morter!) The errors and inconsistencies continue to mount until the climax at the Statue of Liberty. It's obvious from the descriptions the author gives that not only has he never been to the Statue, or Liberty Island, but didn't even bother to look at it on Google maps! Overall, this had the potential to be a great novel with an engaging premise. Unfortunately, due to the lack of research and inconsistencies, the book falls far short.
