Editorial Reviews

Review

"First there was Spock, then Brazelton. Now there is Heins. An experienced mother, grandmother, and pediatrician offers terse, to the point, practical advice. What more could a parent, new or experienced, want? All parents should read this book and keep it handy to address the many issues that arise in raising children. This is THE prarenting book for the millenium." -- Vincent Fulginiti, MD

Hurray for Dr. Heins! Her advice is sensible and practical-easy to understand and easy to put to use. She recognizes that parents have needs and rights of their own; she doesn't expect you to be a saint. And if your kid doesn't happen to be a perfect little angel, you won't hear Dr. H. telling you that it's all your fault!" -- Judith Rich Harris

In today's parenting world, the common-sense wisdom and experience-based approach of author, pediatrician, mother (and grandmother) Marilyn Heins, MD will be a welcome addition (perhaps a godsend) to many young parents - even to some veteran parents. Dr. Heins keeps her advice simple, straightforward, and relevant. I envy the young moms and dads who will read this rich compendium and keep it on the shelf as a resource (it will be well-thumbed before long) to help them raise their families. -- Alan J. Gelenberg

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensible and effective advice, July 9, 2000
By
This review is from: ParenTips for Effective, Enjoyable Parenting (Paperback)
This is the parenting book I recommend the most often to the parents of children I teach. Finding the topic that concerns a parent at the moment is easy, with suggestions for action given up front, and the developmental rationale and longterm suggestions following. Marilyn Heins speaks clearly, directly and sensibly to parents, giving them the support and confidence they need to be effective. In thirty years of work with young children, this is the most useful, practical and valuable book I can recommend to parents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Our Favorite Wedding Gift for Young People Merging Families, September 22, 2001
By
This review is from: ParenTips for Effective, Enjoyable Parenting (Paperback)
"ParenTips for Effective, Enjoyable Parenting" is our favorite wedding gift for young couples, each with a child or children, who are merging their respective families. Since each partner is sure to bring a different orientation to child-raising, discord or at least inconsistencies can follow. This is hard on kids. But help is at hand. Dr. Heins, a popular pediatrician and educator--as well as a cracker-jack mom--has put together a contemporary, effective, practical, and caring how-to-do-it book. She has some great guidelines on raising siblings. With "ParenTips" at their fingertips, newly-linked parents can be secure they are using common-sense approaches that work. A couple of bonuses: "ParenTips," is well-organized with a good index and fun to read.

I've appreciated especially her "Sexuality/Gender" section. This is an large, awkward topic that is central to kids' understanding who they are. And it's a hard one for many parents to deal with adequately. But she shows you how to talk to kids about it in a matter-of-fact way that helps them appreciate that side of themselves.

Perhaps it's because her philosophy agrees with mine, but when I look up a problem, I'm always wanting to say "Amen, Marilyn!"

4.0 out of 5 stars High praise and thanks, July 17, 2000

nancy (Tucson, AZ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: ParenTips for Effective, Enjoyable Parenting (Paperback)
Tucson is fortunate to have a nationally recognized resource such as Marilyn Heins. I am a parent, a parent to be, a nurse and am employed in the child care/advocacy field. I have found this book to contain sensible advice, as it highlights achievable outcomes and, as such, can be a valuable resouce to any parent. Even when you don't agree, word for word, with Dr. Heins' view on certain child-related matters, it is easy to see the reasoning behind them, and to respect her views. I have recommended this book as a resource to my child's preschool (and they purchased it!) so other parents can benefit.
