Old fashioned common sense!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Parent Power! (Paperback)
None of that complicated psycho-babble! Very straightforward comments and ideas based on old-fashioned values and common-sense. He can be a bit on the harsh side now and then, but if you filter that out this is a book full of good thoughts and ideas. Also recommended: Kid Cooperation (How to Stop Yelling, Nagging and Pleading) by Elizabeth Pantley

i was at my wits end in how i could get my 3 children to listen, cooperate, and get along. this book put everything into a whole new perspective. i felt empowered after reading it(which took about 3 hours because i couldn't put it down) and things didn't seem so impossible. he made me laugh and realize that these problems happen to everyone at some stage in their children's upbringing. it all seemed so common sense i wish i would've thought of it first.

Excellent and on the mark for today's parents!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Parent Power! (Paperback)
All parents should read this book, if only to reinforce the reminder that parents should be in charge of the household and children should be loved and taught. The author's comments on tolerance, humor, common sense approaches to parenting and discipline are good reminders to us all - even if we already know them (or think we do!).

Excellent! Direct, humorous, insightful & instantly useful!,

John Rosemond has an uncanny knack for getting right to the heart of whatever parenting problem has got you tied in knots. He provides (often humorous) insights into the basis for many common problems as well as practical solutions. His suggestions can also be easily adapted to other situations, and are usually very simple to implement. Basically, he empowers parents to take action while reassuring us that most of us already know what is best for our children. He gives us tools to use to enforce our values, but does not tell us what those values "ought" to be. This was the most useful parenting book I ever read and I highly recommend it for anyone who spends time with kids (not just parents). You won't ever regret buying it

Excellent book for all parents!,

I believe every parent should read this book and keep it by their bedside while raising their children. Dr. Rosemond doesn't claim to know everything but his methods have been proven to work time and time again. Every suggestion I have followed with my son has worked. The parent should be in charge, not the child. You will not regret buying this book.

Gives you lots of confidence,
By M. Breakstone (Jacksonville, FL) - See all my reviews

I've read lots of parenting books, most of them are the same, but this one has more of a relax, calm down, it's going to be ok, kind of tone. As a mother of a two year old boy, I've had my ups and downs. It was a discipline problem what made me buy this book. I was desperate, so as soon as I got it I went to the index (the topics are divided per age groups, which is great), and looked for the specific situation and how to handle it. To make a long story short, after trying different methods, it was the one recommended by Dr. Rosemond in this book that finally worked!!!

Excellent read that every parent should invest in,
This review is from: Parent Power (Paperback)
This book is insightful and could possibly be deemed the "manual" that every child should be born with. It's witty yet it is a good read with an impacting message. Unlike other "parenting" books, this one doesn't make you feel that you are right or wrong in your parenting style; however, it does lend some how-to tips and suggestions. It's very reasonable and utilizes common sense for problems and issues that we as parents tend to make mountains of. I tried a handful of the techniques suggested and the difference was amazing, and I'll admit, I was a parent who thought I was getting 99.9% of everything "right." I don't mind admitting how way off base I was and thanks to this book I have seen a tremendous turn-around.

I was once a fan of Rosemond,
By A Customer
This review is from: Parent Power! (Paperback)
When I lived in North Carolina, I read John Rosemond's column and had great respect for what he said. Then I found my parents (we had been separated by adoption), had my own child, and began to realize that some of his advice just does not cut it. For instance, our toddler son still sleeps with us and he is one of the most independent and well-balanced children I have met.
The thing that really bothers me about John Rosemond's views, however, is his stance on adoption. He gives no value to God and nature's choice of parents, relying instead on the "legal parents" that adoption (i.e., social workers and lawyers) creates. He makes the ridiculous comment that "real parents" are the "legal" ones and that we natural parents don't count unless we raise our children. He is also against open records. As an adoptee who was separated for over 34 years from my natural family, I cannot imagine bringing a child into the world without knowing my own family history. Family cannot be erased by mere severance of "parental rights." Even Moses returned to his natural family after being raised in opulent surroundings. Having read Rosemond's stance on adoption and his disregard for natural families, I am beginning more and more to doubt his advice on child-rearing. |
