Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The authors, who are parents and collaborators on Earth Angels: True Stories and Real People Who Bring Heaven to Earth, have compiled an array of parenting tips and strategies from childcare experts like pediatrician William Sears, psychologist Lawrence Kutner, columnist John Rosemond and other doctors, therapists and writers. The "lessons" are organized into thematic sections from infant care to discipline, values, education and divorce. Some of the contributors offer general strategies, like therapist Jane Nelsen's advice to "take time for training and then don't do things for children that they can do for themselves," or postpartum expert Karen Kleiman's essay on taking the pressure off women to be perfect mothers. Others provide concrete tips: parent education pioneer Nancy Samalin's discipline techniques include making impersonal statements ("books belong on the shelves"), while author Jim Fay offers steps for "tease-proofing" your kids. Though the book offers lessons from numerous respected parenting experts, many readers may feel that the brief entries generally two to five pages are no substitute for in-depth, single-topic volumes or the traditional comprehensive guides by one authority. There are plenty of useful tidbits and eye-catching luminaries here, but the book will probably not be anyone's must-have reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars I DON'T AGREE WITH THE OTHER REVIEWER, April 17, 2002
This review is from: Parent School: Simple Lessons from Leading Experts on Being a Mom and Dad (Hardcover)
I am a single mom and my best friend bought this book for me. Because I am a new mom I don't know any of the authors out there. All of the books were confusing because I didn't know whose advice to take. Parent School is full of different advice by different experts so you get a taste of each of their beliefs. I've already bought Nancy Samalin's book because all of her information was in the back of Parent School. Because of Parent School I was able to pick an expert I really like and buy her book.
Parent School is a MUST-HAVE because for those of us who don't have a clue who the experts are this is the BEST PLACE TO START.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Gift, April 3, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Parent School: Simple Lessons from Leading Experts on Being a Mom and Dad (Hardcover)
Once I saw this book, I knew I had found the perfect gift for new parents, and parents just looking for some advice. What a great idea. Finally, a resource that teaches parents the lessons that they wished they had learned in school. Leading experts in the field provide their opinions on parenting, organized in an easy to follow lesson plan. Two close friends of mine just had babies and I plan to send each one of them this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential, March 25, 2002

Jeff Kagan (Lake Worth, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Parent School: Simple Lessons from Leading Experts on Being a Mom and Dad (Hardcover)
Parent School is an essential guide for parents with kids of all ages. This book is different than other parenting books because it offers varying advice from many experts. You receive information from many different voices instead of one author.

As parents of a young boy we have found this book to offer practical advice along with reassuring thoughts and encouragement as we try to raise an emotionally healthy child.

The manner in which the book is written is excellent since each chapter offers advice in a straight-to-the-point way. There is no fluff - just practical information.

We found this book to be an amazing collection. It is far superior to the myriad of medicore material available. This may be the holy grail of parenting books.
