As we approach the 1990s, parents--and librarians--are being barraged with books of parenting advice. In this new book, Osborne (psychology, Hesston Coll.) introduces four groups of parenting skills--those needed for the "no problem" area, the child's problem area, the parent's problem area, and the mutual problem area--and then develops the concept of maintaining balance among the groups. He then carefully reviews the three popular philosophies of parenting--James Dobson's disciplinarianism, Thomas Gordon's parent effectiveness training, and B.F. Skinner's behaviorism. Although primarily of use as a college text, this is a well-presented overview and guide for parents as well, and would be especially useful for parent discussion groups. (Though most of Good Books' books are about the Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch, this work is nonsectarian.) A worthwhile addition to college and public library collections. Recommended.
