Book Description

September 1, 1999
An emergency guide for the tough issues parents of 10- to 15-year-olds face every day.

In our risk-filled world, 10- to 15-year-olds trust their parents to be there when the chips are down. Many parents are well-meaning but often paralyzed with fear, unsure whether and how to intervene:

"My son is always shut up in his room. Could he be using drugs?"

"Lately my daughter is obsessed with her weight. Does she have an eating disorder?"

"Since the divorce, my son has been so angry. Could he be depressed, too?"

"After going out with her boyfriend, my daughter came home with a bruise. Did he hit her?"

"Someone my daughter met in a chat room wants to meet in person. Is that safe?"

Drawing on a national survey of parents, teachers, and students, interviews with a wide range of experts, and the latest research, and written with the support of the National Middle School Association, Parenting 911 brings parents the information and reassurance they need to identify and handle the crises that can erupt even in the best of homes. You'll find invaluable advice on:

Substance abuse Sexual encounters Troubling friends Depression Eating disorders Violence Breaking the law Nontraditional family structures Failure in school Extreme sports Online dangers

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Giannetti and Sagarese, coauthors of The Roller Coaster Years, once again team up to help parents navigate the potentially rough waters of the early teen years. Focusing on the age group they call the middlers, Giannetti and Sagarese present straightforward information based on current research, surveys and interviews, covering such topics as substance abuse, violence, self-mutilation, depression, sex, danger on the Internet and the risks of extreme sports. The authors urge parents to be vigilant and emotionally available; they also suggest that too much time alone provides an invitation for kids this age to experiment with troublesome diversions. This book focuses on solutions rather than scare tactics, yet clearly lists the danger signals that indicate real trouble is brewing. Stressing that "the world our children are growing up in is not the one we remember," the authors encourage parents to become appropriately educated on the issues their middlers face. In the wake of recent school violence, this timely title, endorsed by the National Middle School Association, is a welcome resource for parents seeking both preventive tactics and more involvement with their middle-age kids. From Library Journal

Following up on their excellent earlier work, The Roller-Coaster Years: Raising Your Child Through the Magical yet Maddening School Years, Giannetti and SagareseAonline parenting experts for iVillage's Parentsoup web siteAhere focus on rescuing "middlers" (ten- to 15-year-olds) from a wide range of predicaments. Without effective coping and teaching skills, many well-intentioned parents can make serious mistakes and watch their middlers struggle in delinquent behaviors. The authors provide a wide range of resources and preventive strategies in an expertly organized, lucid format supported by the latest research. Psychologist Czudner has written an equally timely book. He discusses "budding criminals" (ages two to 17): morally illiterate juveniles who are not very "nice children" even if they do not end up in jail. They are addicted to power and try to obtain it through activities ranging from classroom disruption to murder. Early detection helps, as does the teaching of "pro-social" skills and moral values based on understanding and feeling. Nurturing feelings of empathy and guilt makes children responsive to the suffering of others. Czudner considers empathy innate and guilt a "positive human characteristic." He decries the excessive modern preoccupation with self-awareness, self-love, and self-esteem, arguing that what is needed is for children to become morally and emotionally intelligent. Excellent companion reading to Daniel P. Goleman's Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ (LJ 9/1/95).AChogollah Maroufi, California State Univ., Los Angeles

Parenting today is so scary. Drugs, sexual abuse, internet weirdos. When it comes time for a parent to start letting go of their emerging adolescent, most do with a very large leap of faith and a lot of fear. PARENTING 911 is a must read for anyone who wants some concrete tips on protecting or rescuing their teen or emerging teen. What I like best about the authors is that they they are obviously parents themselves so they are very realistic (unlike some authorities who make you think they have never seen a teen before). Been there, done that. They know what works and what doesn't and what signs to look for. They allow you to feel back in charge of your child's raging hormones rather than at their mercy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Parenting 911, April 3, 2000
This review is from: Parenting 911: How to Safeguard and Rescue Your 10 to 15 Year-Old from Substance Abuse, Sexual Encounters....and Other Risky Situations (Paperback)
Parenting 911 is one of the best books I have read for dealing with 10-15 year olds. This book deals with issues that kids this age face on a daily basis. Parenting 911 helps parents to understand what is going on with our kids and gives parents tips on how to deal with these issues. The co-authors, Giannetti & Sagarese supply the reader with resources that can be very useful. This book is a must read for all homes with teens and pre-teens.

Kids cannot be raised according the rules set in a book. Each kid is a unique individual and would be negatively impacted by a inflexible parent. If you feel the need to read this book, you obviously have no trust of your child, or your parenting abilities. Taking advice from somebody else about your own child is never the way to go.
