5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Resource!
This book was just what I needed! I'm always trying to find other parents who have experience with sensory kids and this book had lots of stories, practical hints, and thoughtful reflections from parents in many different situations. I came away with lists of resources to go to, but more importantly, I came away appreciating our family and was motivated to laugh with my...

I was disapointed with this book. It was more about family dynamics, especially how to have a good marriage than SPD. It was more about the author's austistic brother than dealing with SPD. Maybe because I have already read alot about SPD, but I thought this book was not worth buying and with the exception of the vinette about "Holland Schmolland" which is both funny...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Resource!, January 17, 2007
This review is from: Parenting a Child with Sensory Processing Disorder: A Family Guide to Understanding and Supporting Your Sensory-Sensitive Child (Paperback)
This book was just what I needed! I'm always trying to find other parents who have experience with sensory kids and this book had lots of stories, practical hints, and thoughtful reflections from parents in many different situations. I came away with lists of resources to go to, but more importantly, I came away appreciating our family and was motivated to laugh with my kids and husband more. I'm so grateful the author took the time to put all the information together to address this issue -- especially since he's a busy parent too!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Family Relationships and SPD - A Unique Resource, February 14, 2007
This review is from: Parenting a Child with Sensory Processing Disorder: A Family Guide to Understanding and Supporting Your Sensory-Sensitive Child (Paperback)
Due to their sometimes unusual reactions and needs, parents of children with sensory processing disorder may need additional levels of patience, compassion and understanding. With this book, parents are given valuable tools to strengthen their relationships and to help their special children reach their potential. Through their own personal stories and the examples of other parent-advocates, the authors illustrate the tensions of living with children who have different aspects of Sensory Processing Disorders. They authors impart a concrete message of hope and encouragement with their advice on problem solving, coping strategies and relationship building. A useful book for professionals serving families, as well as parents who wish insight into their family dynamics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book Out there on SPD, January 4, 2007
This review is from: Parenting a Child with Sensory Processing Disorder: A Family Guide to Understanding and Supporting Your Sensory-Sensitive Child (Paperback)
Great author who offers many perspectives on raising a child w/ special needs. I will read this one over and over, and will make sure my husband and parents read it, too. Every aspect of life is considered; it informs you, challenges you, and inspires! A must read for anyone who has a child with SPD or any similar "diagnosis".

5.0 out of 5 stars Compassionate and informative, January 11, 2007
This review is from: Parenting a Child with Sensory Processing Disorder: A Family Guide to Understanding and Supporting Your Sensory-Sensitive Child (Paperback)
This book, on a burgeoning subject, is packed with stories, tips, and resources, and covers all aspects of life and parenthood (including chapters on the too-often ignored subjects of sibs and marriage). A fine read straight through, or, as the authors recommend, taken in short bites as the reader skips from subject to subject. Probably everybody knows some parent, sib, or other relative who would find this book a godsend!

This book really helped me understand and identify what my son is going through. I appreciated the stories from the authors' lives - it made it easy to understand and I felt connected to them as struggling parents. The resources listed in the back are a huge help too. Thank you!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, too little about parenting, December 19, 2007

I expected this book to focus more on parenting. Instead, it primarily talks about sensory processing disorder. There are a lot of books that do that. It does have good info about SPD, but not nearly enough about parenting for me. Sensational Kids (by Miller) actually has more helpful tips.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well done, September 19, 2008
This review is from: Parenting a Child with Sensory Processing Disorder: A Family Guide to Understanding and Supporting Your Sensory-Sensitive Child (Paperback)
read "Parenting a Child with Sensory Processing Disorder" over the holidays. Very well done. The book was easy to read and felt personable.

I like the fact that you really look at the family and the domino effect created by everyone living in the household, PSD or not. I also like the fact that you give a foundation of information for families to use, an introduction to the whole picture. Then I was even more impressed by your follow through on contact information to go deeper.

Your introduction to recognizing differences of each partner and using them to the families advantage instead of letting it separate and/or divide was also well done. Once again, you followed up with contact information to go deeper.

Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and experience with others. I will be recommending this book to families and providers.

This review is from: Parenting a Child with Sensory Processing Disorder: A Family Guide to Understanding and Supporting Your Sensory-Sensitive Child (Paperback)
This book is wonderful for a family with a child with SPD. It doesn't cover therapy for the child but instead focuses on what the family needs to survive and thrive. It talks about relationships in the family and how to strengthen them while coping with a child with SPD. It is a must have for a family with SPD.
