5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Teresa Mustelier on September 4, 2011
Format: Paperback
This book is so funny, so worrisome and so true that it should be required reading for every mom and dad to be. This is like an "Everything you ever wanted to now about new pregnancies and parenting but were afraid to ask" book. The author is great about remembering the nitty-gritty details of pregnancy and the first weeks of parenting which is quite a feat since most new parents (as she is quick to point out) are working on like half a cylinder. She points out the pitfalls and the pratfalls with good humor and insight and as a recovering new parent I was glad that someone had the good sense to write it all down. I enjoyed this book tremendously

Every pregnant family should read this book. You will not believe any of it and you will think the author is just a very funny writer but reading this book will make every new parent a bit smarter and a bit more prepared which it the most important thing. I do not think that if I had read this book while I was pregnant that I would have believed that it was to be true and that these things would happen to my husband and I. I would have believed that it was going to be different for us. I was, after all, a neonatal nurse. Who could be more prepared. No one knew the "fine print" better than I did, or so I thought. This book is incredibly funny and incredibly accurate. The author has a keen eye for the surprises of parenthood and pregnancy as well as for the instances during early parenting and pregnancy where you are completely blind sided. Give this book to new parents. Give this book to newly pregnant couples. They may not thank you immediately, but eventually, they will thank you.

It's been quite a while since I became a daddy, but this book brings it all back. The awesome responsibilty of being in charge of another human being, one who starts out completely helpless and later seems determined to damage themselves! And the lack of sleep, I see why they use it as a torture technique, do you know it is possible to actually die from lack of sleep? In her book Emily gives the best advice on babies I've ever heard, and it comes through loud and clear: so-called experts can be wrong about you and your kid! You need to find your own parenting technique, you will find your own style, and it will definitely be better if you read this book.
