If you're expecting to read about sophisticated theories on children's psychological development or anything like that, this is not the book for you.

I love how the Dummy books just keep it plain and simple.

I'd recommend this book only if you've already read books by credentialed authors, since the authors only expertize is that they have children. They have obviously researched their material because they do offer some good advice. Here's a few books by experts I'd recommend: The Baby Book and The Discipline Book BOTH by Dr. William Sears, and Kid Cooperation (How to Stop Yelling, Nagging and Pleading) AND Perfect Parenting Dictionary BOTH by Elizabeth Pantley

I had found this book to be one of the best, simplest and most supportive parenting books around. at the time my son was 7 -12 months, I was pretty much without a support system, and this book was my lifeline and my bible to parenting. It's wonderful.

We've bought other ...for dummies books before and have been quite happy. But this book was a huge disappointment. Maybe because the topic isn't easily handled in the typical ...for dummies format. Also, the author you can tell is used to writing computer manuals. The book is often preachy and rarely helpful. I definitely wouldn't recommend it.

I bought this book while I was pregnant with my first child. He is now three and a half and an awesome kid! We always get compliments on how well he acts in restaurants, other people's homes, movie theaters.....you get the picture. This book made me think about things that I never would have thought of, and I recommend it to everyone who is about to start a family and even to a few that already have kids and they can't handle them! My son is now a wonderful big brother to a baby sister and I could not be happier! I am ordering this book right now for a neighbor expecting her first.

I found "Parenting for Dummies" easy and fun to read and filled with useful information for not only first time parents with newborn babies but also for parents with older kids as well. The chapter on communicating with your child was especially insightful.

This book has several topics discussed in which it is clear the author has no first hand experience & thus should refrain from giving advice as they are clearly not qualified too do so. I read several books per week and this is the first one I have ever purchased with regret upon completion due to the lack of helpful advice as well as the number of contradictions. This book gives advice of working less and hiring help to better spend time with your kids as a single parent which is completely Impractical. Most single parents have financial hardships so advice of work less and pay for a maid would be expected from somebody that doesn't understand math. Also, this book explains to never lie to your child. However, when your child asks 'where do babies come from' the advice given is to tell them ' from God' which is a complete lie. Religion aside, it It is a flat out lie. I don't appreciate the Author's indirect means of promoting religion by protraying families that choose to give their children the gift of independent thinking by observing and questioning as appossed to 'just believe' especially in something that has never in the history is the world proven to have any merit(religion). The author's reasoning for church being a great place to raise your family is simply ' because God will like you' which is mind blowing to me that a person with a IQ as low as required to believe something like that has the ability to write a book. The Authors knows not what God likes nor has the right to dictate as to whom he likes and doesn't like and for whatever reason. The Authors explains that children have imaginary friends and we should tend to that.Read more ›

Gives a very basic overview of parenting concepts. I didn't use it for parenting; was just reading out of a personal interest in child development.

The information seems reasonable for the most part... The only part I didn't like was that the author took the "teaching your child morals" part as an opportunity to proselytize. Not really appropriate and certainly not respectful to atheist parents, or other non-religious folks.
