this book was my support system,
By A Customer
This review is from: Parenting for Dummies (Paperback)
I had found this book to be one of the best, simplest and most supportive parenting books around. at the time my son was 7 -12 months, I was pretty much without a support system, and this book was my lifeline and my bible to parenting. It's wonderful.

Much better books out there,
By A Customer
This review is from: Parenting For Dummies (Paperback)
We've bought other ...for dummies books before and have been quite happy. But this book was a huge disappointment. Maybe because the topic isn't easily handled in the typical ...for dummies format. Also, the author you can tell is used to writing computer manuals. The book is often preachy and rarely helpful. I definitely wouldn't recommend it.

Some good advice....some not-so-good,
By A Customer

I'd recommend this book only if you've already read books by credentialed authors, since the authors only expertize is that they have children. They have obviously researched their material because they do offer some good advice. Here's a few books by experts I'd recommend: The Baby Book and The Discipline Book BOTH by Dr. William Sears, and Kid Cooperation (How to Stop Yelling, Nagging and Pleading) AND Perfect Parenting Dictionary BOTH by Elizabeth Pantley

Excellent easy-to-read reference book for all parents!,

I found "Parenting for Dummies" easy and fun to read and filled with useful information for not only first time parents with newborn babies but also for parents with older kids as well. The chapter on communicating with your child was especially insightful.

I bought this book while I was pregnant with my first child. He is now three and a half and an awesome kid! We always get compliments on how well he acts in restaurants, other people's homes, movie theaters.....you get the picture. This book made me think about things that I never would have thought of, and I recommend it to everyone who is about to start a family and even to a few that already have kids and they can't handle them! My son is now a wonderful big brother to a baby sister and I could not be happier! I am ordering this book right now for a neighbor expecting her first.

Wow! There really is a book called Parenting for Dummies. Sad to say when I read the part on tantrums, they don't talk about the parents who bring their tired, cranky, hungry kids into public places and then ignore the kid as the rest of us want to smack the parent over the head, preferably with a book that explains to the ignoramus parent that allowing the kid to scream in public IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. It is not the kids fault. IT IS YOURS. Take the kid home, feed them some decent food, don't take them out at nap time or for heaven sake, 11PM at night. When I see these parents ignore these screaming infants, I want to grab the doofus parent and ask them if they have a history of broken chromosomes in their genetic background, but most of the ignorant parent's wouldn't get it anyway.
It has reached a point where I simply cannot stand shopping or going to a restaurant anymore. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE??? My son had ADHD. We stayed home and let out all the energy there, playing outside, limiting TV, lots of sports to work on attention. I remember my daughter, the first time she tried a tantrum in a store, I calmly wheeled her out, got in the car and we went home. She was about 4 years old and wanted something, I can't remember what, but she NEVER had a tantrum in a store again. My son was NEVER allowed to run around the store. First, he could get hurt, or lost. I back-packed him until he was 4. Good exercise for me, he could see everything and he never had a fit or screamed. I AM SO SICK OF PARENTS WHO DON'T PARENT!!!! Don't you CARE that you kid is trying to tell you something? Well, I will speak for them: the stores are overwhelming, they are tired, hungry, sensory overloaded and you just make it worse by IGNORING it all. GO HOME and learn how to parent. If this book can give these parents even a clue how to parent, then buy a stack and put them in the parent's cart while they are ignoring the poor kid.

Ok book but didn't appear to be very interesting. I think I was looking for something a little different. A lot of this looked like common sense.

This is a great resource book. My husband and I were about to have our first child and were nervous about what to do with him. This book answered a lot of our questions and helped us to remember to have a sense of humor about the whole child-rearing process. I love the flow chart on what to do when the baby is crying. This is a definately better book than those "What to expect..." books!

Like The Rest of Series, This Book Will Save You Money,

This review is from: Parenting For Dummies (Paperback)
Like all of the books in this outstanding series, this text serves as a forum to express again the FOR DUMMIES Books' most valuable concept: simplicity in presentation and info.
Distilling parenting down to its most value sticks and stones, this book runs the gamut from how to potty train to how to deal with the "I don't eat dat" problem with little ones. Althought not an end-all book, I would suggest that parents will do no wrong STARTING with this book when looking for learning on raising a child. |
