Throughout, the authors' tone is  encouraging and reassuring, and parents will be left  feeling they can succeed in helping their child.

The authors have created a wonderful resource which pulls together information from the many agencies that focus on diagnosing, treating, and educating a child with a learning disorder and/or attention deficit disorder (ADD). Tuttle, special education coordinator for the Winthrop, Massachusetts, public schools, and Paquette, an educational writer and librarian, explain indicative behaviors for parents to identify and successfully demystify the necessary testing process. Looking beyond institutional settings, the authors explain how this diagnosis will affect the entire family. They also offer concrete examples of behaviors that parents can make use of in the home, all the while gently redirecting confusion to a celebration of the child's uniqueness. Particularly important, the authors discuss the laws that apply to the child and the educational system and stress that parents must become advocates for their child to ensure that the child's very special needs are met and his or her self-esteem nurtured. As a reference, the book is also useful, presenting a glossary and four appendixes listing all the states' directors of special education, parent training and information programs, resource organizations, and related publications. This highly recommended source covers all the bases and may become the number one resource that doctors and teachers will suggest to anxious parents.
