A breakthrough book for this harried mom,
By A Customer
This review is from: Parenting Teens With Love & Logic: Preparing Adolescents for Responsible Adulthood (Hardcover)
My son turned 13. He became a different person. I became a different parent. I didn't understand what was happening, and then we reached a crisis point. This book caused me to completely reposition my parenting philosophy. It's allowed me to focus more on the love of my child, than on the fear of how he will "turn out." The idea of being a "consultative parent" is an absolute breakthrough for me, and one that is working beautifully after only one week of practicing it. I am thrilled with the results and the possibilities. The authors are to be applauded with a standing ovation.

The best book for parents raising teens,

Whether you have troubled teens, average teens, or great teens, this book provides a plethora of answers for parents with questions about being the best parent they can be. The love and logic program teaches parents how to love their child by taking care of themselves and by allowing their teen to suffer real world consequences. The book is half instruction and half ideas and suggestions for resolving common teen problems such as parties, friends, drugs, sex, backtalking, etc. I'm going to make it part of my permanent library.

I couldn't put this book down for days, it had so much information that I needed to help change my thinking. Right away I used the ideas and boy did things change around the house. I am a single parent and just didn't know how to get around the constant problems of reasoning with a strong willed child. I recommend this book to all parents even if you think you are doing all the right things. You will find great help and your life will be easier.

Excellent book that helps parents deal with Teens.,

This review is from: Parenting Teens With Love & Logic: Preparing Adolescents for Responsible Adulthood (Hardcover)
The authors guide parents through the necessary steps teens take while learning to become adults by making choices, good and bad. They give real life examples of situations that cause parents a great deal of emotional stress and many excellent ways respond that allow you to stick to your standards, but in such a way without adding velocity to a viscous cycle. This book really helped me stand back, stay objective, and keep a proper perspective while loving and teaching my teen. I highly recommend this book for any parent struggling with any type of negative teenage behavior.

I ordered this book because my stepdaughter came to live with us. I have never parented a teenager previously.....and my husband and I have very different ways of parenting. I found this book to be insightful and gave me an understanding of how teenagers need to be "handled." My husband and I now give a lot more responsibility to our daughter and let her make her own choices and decisions (well most of them) on her own. It has helped our household and our relationships immensely.

This book was recommended by my son's therapist for us to read as a new way to parent. I found the book quite interesting and it gave me some new thoughts. We have incorporated some of the suggestions in the book and have had a lot of success with it. I'm not sure if I could do all the responses to certain situations, but many chapters in which there were responses that we could use. It does take an open minded parent, and those parents who are drill sgt. parents will have a tough time using this book unless they are willing to change.

Memorable take-home messages,

This book helped me put a lot of parenting into perspective. I found that the take-home messages of the book are easy to remember. The key one for me was, "Who owns the problem?" What a concept. The premise is that rescuing my kids from the consequences of their actions is a lousy way to teach kids responsibility. The section on grounding of kids was great too. This book is making me question practically every aspect of my knee-jerk parenting responses. Highly recommended.

It works!,
By Single Mom (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Parenting Teens With Love And Logic (Updated and Expanded Edition) (Hardcover)
I have a very independent 14 year old daughter who does not respond well to being told what to do. Using love and logic strategies works really well with her. If I ask her what her plan is for homework tonight, she gives me a reasonable plan and does it, which is much better than yelling at her all night long to get it done. This works in a lot of different situations. For example if I ask her what the consequence should be (before hand) if she doesn't get her room cleaned when she says she will, there is a lot less arguing about doing her room or about the consequences if she does not get her room clean.

This book was very informative. The techniques the authors describe are effective, and easy to implement. The effort required is well worth it if you are truly interested in changing your teen's behavior.
The last chapter of the book contains what the authors describe as pearls. They are great dialog starters for tough subjects like sex drugs and money. The only thing I would change about this book; is buying it thirty years earlier, when I raised my first teenager.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Parenting Teens With Love And Logic (Updated and Expanded Edition) (Hardcover)
This is the fourth book in the Love and Logic series that has been purchased by either myself or my daughter. She is a fourth grade teacher and the mother of a ten year old and twelve year old. Parenting with Love and Logic, which she bought and thoroughly enjoyed, led me to by Grandparenting with Love and Logic. She then pruchased Teaching with Love and Logic and applies the theory that students need to take ownership and responsibility to her classroom. The Grandparenting with Love and Logic is "right on" with suggestions to make having grandchildren around a pleasure. My daughter and her husband, a minister, are currently reading the Parenting Teens with Love and Logic together and are finding many truths. This series puts into words the theories we all know will work, but until we see them in print and go "Ooooh, of course!" don't always think to use.
