Wonderful resource for parents,
By A Customer
This review is from: Parenting With Scripture: A Topical Guide for Teachable Moments (Paperback)
This is a great book for parents who want to teach their children to apply God's instructions in their lives. I can't think of Bible verses for various things my children do so I appreciate having something in a condensed form for reference. Kara uses topics we all face as parents: anger, giving, cursing, kindness, etc and gives several verses that talk about that particular behavior. She then gives ideas for discussion and activities (for both parent and child) to instill God's words in their lives. This is appropriate for all ages from toddler - teenager. I've used this book a couple of times and it's already saved a few battles with my 8 year old. I even learned a thing or two to incorporate in my life! This would make a great gift for new or expectant parents.

I have loved using this handy resource with my children. In the past week, I have used it for contentment and anger. We went over the definition she gives and I had my children learn one of the verses. It gives us all a point of reference - we know what we SHOULD be doing!! It is great!!!

Makes teaching what the Bible says easy,

This review is from: Parenting With Scripture: A Topical Guide for Teachable Moments (Paperback)
For those of us parents who have difficulty recalling the exact passage and location in the Bible of a scripture, this book is a dream. Categorized by topic, such as perseverance, honesty or attitude, the book offers multiple scriptures supporting each attribute, and a "questions for discussion page" about each one. The book is helpful as a teaching tool whether for gentle correction or introducing topics for discussion. As my kids have gotten older, they will say, "Mom, what does the book say about (fill in the blank)?"This book works in wonderful conjunction with the Bible as it leads the reader to ask questions about where passages originate and what the circumstances were. I highly recommend this book, whatever the age of your children.

This book is more of a quick reference guide, but works well with another book called "Teach Them Diligently" that teaches you how to be a godly parent it explains scripture through life and the bible. You can read my review also on the book I just mentioned. I bought both of them 2gether and loved them. A must have for all parents

Your own parenting-specific concordance,

This review is from: Parenting With Scripture: A Topical Guide for Teachable Moments (Paperback)
This book is kind of like a parenting-specific concordance. It is organized by topic with verses that correspond to each, as well as discussion points, action points, and related topics. We use it for family devotions as well as for answering questions and correcting sinful behavior. While there's no replacement for living a Bible-saturated life and digging into the Bible on your own, this is a handy resource to complement that. Topics include: anger, apathy, appreciation, attitude, beauty, bragging, change, character, charity, cheerfulness, choices, comfort, commitment, compassion, competition, complaining, compromise, conceitedness, confidence, conformity, contentment, cooperation, courage, crafty (which I think would be better renamed "shrewdness"), criticism, cursing...and that's just A-C!!!

This book has been a valuable resource in raising my children to the glory of God! I am on my second copy! Scriptures are arranged by topics A-Z along with some practical application that can be used with the child. The topical guide makes it SO easy to find those scriptures that I know in my head but typically don't know enough word for word to find them in the Bible. This is a MUST have for Christ centered homes!

Great reference for Christian parents!,

I have been using this book for almost 10 years now to refer to biblical scripture. I have found it to be an excellent resource for teachable moments when it helps to have a scripture back-up to explain what God says about a topic. We all have to pick our battles, especially as our kids get older. This has eliminated many battles because my kids understand the power in hearing it from God's word. I also like the activities that are included with many of the topics. Having a tangible way for my kids to learn about a topic helps reinforce the real meaning of the scripture for them. EVERY parent should own a copy.

Fantastic! This has been so helpful in the life of my family. We use it very often. It is so easy to look things up and use the icons from the key to instruct you how to put these thoughts into actions. Great Bible refrences! There is a Bible verse for every topic! It's just a great reference to have. It keeps you out of sticky situations when you do not know how to explain things to your children, and even yourself! I often give this to my girl friends at baby showers. So great!

While searching for scriptural resources to aid our current discipline concerns with our two and a half year old, we came across this little gem and what a gem it is. Parenting with Scripture: A Topical Guide of Teachable Moments by Kara Durbin, is an excellent lifelong resource that should be on every developing domestic diva's shelf if they have children. It's a resource to not only teach the child but aid the parent in guiding children to understand positive character traits via scripture. In this book, Kara presents over 100 character or discipline issues, provides a definition of the character trait, a page worth of scripture references to use as a guide, a series of possible discussion questions and/or devotional thoughts, an activity to reinforce the concept, and some parental helps to encourage the positive behavior in your child in the future. This book could be used as a devotion with older children, a scriptural encouragement for parents of younger children, or even a home school study of character traits. I am currently looking at ways I can incorporate some of Kara's ideas into my daughter's home school curriculum next year. This book has got me so excited. I can't wait. So what topics are covered? The list seems almost endless. Topics are presented in alphabetical order and each topic receives two pages in the book (one for the definition and scripture verses and a second for the devotion-like discussion questions, activity, and parent helps). And, if you don't find a topic you are looking for directly labeled in the book, there is a cross-reference section at the back where you can find leads for other topics you may want to address. That said, here's just a taste of topics you can find: Anger, apathy, appreciation, attitude, beauty, bragging, change, charity, cheerfulness, commitment, compassion, competition, complaining, compromise, contentment, cooperation, courage, discernment, discipline, encouragement, fairness, faith, forgiveness, friendship, gentleness, giving, godliness, goodness, gossip, greed, habits, hate, health, honesty, hope, humility, integrity, jealously, joking, joyfulness, judgment, kindness, knowledge, laziness, listening, love, mercy, obedience, patience, peer pressure, perfection, perseverance, prayer, prejudice, pride, procrastination, respect, responsibility, self-centeredness, self-control, sharing, stress, thankfulness, trust, worry, and lots more. This isn't your typical discipline book with "how to's" or character devotional guide but rather a resource you'll keep coming back to time and again as your child grows. Thus, this is definitely one of my top parenting picks because it is truly what the cover says, "a topical guide for teachable moments." |
