A refreshingly positive and practical approach to parenting

Parents of adopted children face some unique challenges in addition to all the “regular” issues that come with being a parent. Parenting Your Adopted Child provides helpful tools that enable families to understand and counter common myths about adoption that may be harmful to their children. It also clearly demonstrates how parents can effectively tailor their parenting approach to suit their child’s distinct needs.

Written by a renowned pediatrician who specializes in helping adopted children and their families, Parenting Your Adopted Child answers such common concerns as:

  • Why, when, and how do I explain adoption to my child and others?
  • How can I help my child deal with adoption at different stages of life?
  • How do I nurture a strong relationship between siblings?
  • How do I bond with my newborn?

"Parenting Your Adopted Child is a welcome source of practical, useful parenting advice to parents and friends."
--Susan Caughman, editor and publisher, Adoptive Families magazine

Parents of adopted children face unique challenges in addition to all the "regular" problems other families must face. How much information about the adoption should you share with your family? Your neighbors? When should you start explaining adoption to your child, and how? Grounded in a refreshingly positive approach, Parenting Your Adopted Child provides helpful tools that enable you to understand and counter common myths about adoption that may be harmful to your child.

Chock-full of expert advice from a renowned pediatrician who specializes in adoption issues and a noted writer on adoption issues who is also the mother of an adopted child, Parenting Your Adopted Child clearly demonstrates how to tailor your parenting approach to suit your child's distinct needs. You'll find the answers to such common concerns as:

  • Why, when, and how do I explain adoption to my child and others?
  • How can I help my child deal with adoption at different stages of life?
  • How do I nurture a strong relationship between siblings?
  • How do I deal with family members who don't include my child?
  • How do I help my child deal with people who harbor negative views of adoption?
  • Does my child need a therapist and, if so, how do I find the right one?
  • How much should I tell my child's teachers?

2.0 out of 5 stars This book's for you....if you've done little research, April 4, 2005

This review is from: Parenting Your Adopted Child : A Positive Approach to Building a Strong Family (Paperback)
A good book for the person embarking on their adoption journey. However, if you've already adopted and have done a bit of research into adoptive parenting, you are most likely already aware of how to deal with many of the situations presented in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A guidebook to navigating adoptive parenthoo, April 18, 2005
This review is from: Parenting Your Adopted Child : A Positive Approach to Building a Strong Family (Paperback)
Should you treat your adopted child just like your neighbor treats her child who wasn't adopted? Or should you worry about every problem, thinking it may be linked somehow to being adopted?

The answer is that raising an adopted child is a balancing act and Dr. Adesman offers practical advice and guidance on doing just that, whether your child is an infant through the tough adolescent years. Based on practical experience and backed up by valuable research studies, Parenting Your Adopted Child is a helpful book well-worth its very low price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book for many types of parents, June 5, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Parenting Your Adopted Child : A Positive Approach to Building a Strong Family (Paperback)
This is a good book to have in any home's collection of adoption books. It discusses a variety of different topics, and covers everything from infancy to teen years. While some of the aspects of the book were not useful yet (I am adopting a young child), the resources in this book will be valuable as she grows up. Worth your consideration.
