7 of 7 people found the following review helpful By Mary Jo Pedersen on February 17, 2011
Format: Paperback
Parenting Your Adult Child is a helpful book that covers the many issues parents face in launching young adults and fostering a lasting love relationship with them. Susan's own experience as well as the stories of other parents illustrate the delicate balance of letting go while staying connected to adult children. I especially liked the scriptures, the parenting virtues, prayers, and Susan's down to earth yet profoundly spiritual insights about parenthood in the later years! Before I was half way through the book, I could think of a dozen friends I want to give it to!
....insightful, practical, spiritual...very much a Susan Vogt book!

Format: Paperback
This is a book about who we are as a family and how we are constantly influencing each other. A kind of dance, where one now and then the other takes the lead, even when the other sometimes refuses to follow.
It's about parenting an adult child, not rules of the road to be applied, but discovering directions within the relationship.
It is personal and genuine, yet professional and universal.
You can read the virtues portion in one sitting, or meditate on a paragraph and come back later.
Susan Vogt's book about parenting an adult child will give you comfort, but not complacency. You are responsible for the process, not the outcome, she says. But if you want your children to share your faith, or at least your faith tradition, you need to practice, not preach.
This book rings true. Anyone who has guided a child through the transition from dependence to full adulthood will recognize the struggles of that time in the pages of this book. Those who are about to launch into that phase will find support for their passage through that difficult time.
This book would be a good springboard for discussion and faith sharing among parents of older teens and young adults.

Was in the midst of angst over the upcoming wedding of my son...so I read the chapter "Choosing A Mate and Planning a Wedding." I wish I had read Parenting Your Adult Child a year ago. It would have saved me many sleepless nights, days of quandary, and weekends of indecision and isolation. This will fill a void out there.

Format: Paperback
My wife and I have two children. One was a high achiever and easy to raise. He got first job without hardly looking, and recently got married. Our younger child is just finishing high school and has been much more challenging due to special needs. What I liked about Susan Vogt's book is that she addressed the "normal" young adult and also those with special needs. Her chapter, "If Your Child Marches to the Beat of a Different Drummer" really gave us some consolation knowing that there are many other parents in our situation. Each child is different and I appreciated her insights for both kinds of young adults.
