5.0 out of 5 stars Parenting your out-of-control child was exactly what I needed.
I was honestly at my wits end on how to deal with my 6 1/2 year old daughter's behavior. She would constantly disobey and never listen to a word I would say. I had no clue what to do. I almost cried when I finished reading the first two chapters of this book. It was describing exactly what was going on with my daughter. The remaining chapters gave me step by step help...

3.0 out of 5 stars Sleep Deprivation
Like most parenting books, this book ignores the effect of sleep deprivation on a child's behavior. If a child is not getting the proper sleep, no checklist will be effective. No reward/punishment system will work. Modern thought is that up to 30% of childhood misbehavior is due to lack of sleep. In my view this is due to our electronic age: tv, computers, video...

The remaining chapters gave me step by step help on how to deal with her positively and get the results I wanted. The main reason I love this book is because I have stopped yelling and spanking her. She and I are both happier and I can tell she really wants to do what is right. I have also started using the techniques in this book on my 2 year old. Even though she is a little young, I have had amazing success. I would definitely recommend this book to every parent. I have to say it has been a lot of work changing on my part from a yelling/spanking mom to the mom I am now, but I know that all the effort has been worth it's weight in gold.

Another terrific New Harbinger Book! As a school psychologist for 25+ years, I've reviewed myriad parenting books. This is the best! Short, sweet and to the point. Very practical stuff that works. Very readable. If you have problems controlling your child, this book will help you get your child back. And he or she will be happier for it! His suggestions work great for teachers and classroom management as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on parenting!, November 27, 2008
This review is from: Parenting Your Out-of-Control Child: An Effective, Easy-to-Use Program for Teaching Self-Control (Paperback)
As a licenced associate counselor, I can tell you this is an invaluable tool to have in my library to recommend to parents dealing with difficult children. This book, based on extensive research, is concise, easy to follow, and very effective at helping parents quickly gain control of behavior problems with their children. Moreover, the parenting skills outlined in this book are also very effective for everyday issues all parents face with their children. I would highly recommend this book to all parents raising children today.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sleep Deprivation, August 3, 2011
This review is from: Parenting Your Out-of-Control Child: An Effective, Easy-to-Use Program for Teaching Self-Control (Paperback)
Like most parenting books, this book ignores the effect of sleep deprivation on a child's behavior. If a child is not getting the proper sleep, no checklist will be effective. No reward/punishment system will work. Modern thought is that up to 30% of childhood misbehavior is due to lack of sleep. In my view this is due to our electronic age: tv, computers, video games, and to daycare where children are routine "put down" for 3 hours every afternoon, disrupting their normal sleep cycles. Once a child is getting adequate sleep, most any parenting technique will work. For the past 10,000 years, parenting skills have depended on common sense and the transmission of practices from one generation to the next. That still works.
Dr. Rosemond's book, The Well-Behaved Child, includes information on getting a child to sleep enough.
Another point in this book is that the author says to restrain a child in time out if they don't immediately put away their toys and come with you when you tell them too. Other experts, The Incredible Years, for one, advises that you respect your child's interests and time and give them advance notice, not order them away from an activity that they may be deeply absorbed in. Of all the psychobabble I've read, this book is probably the worse so far.
