5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Dealing with child's allergies I have found
This book is very informative when it came to learning about my child's food allergies. It taught me in depth aspects of his allergies to milk, eggs, wheat, nuts and soybean, along with not so common food allergies. It taught about what allergies were, and the most effective methods for establishing exactly which foods he was allergic to.

3.0 out of 5 stars so so
Good on an emotional level - author helps you understand what it really means to have an allergic child, and gives you the psychological and practical tools to deal with it. Recipes however not that interesting (very few) and author does insist on telling you how it would taste better with 'real butter'! which I found frustrating.

This review is from: The Parent's Guide to Food Allergies: Clear and Complete Advice from the Experts on Raising Your Food-Allergic Child (Paperback)

It also has quite a few recipes focused towards kids that were just delicious.

It teaches how to organize your house, deal with their allergies in the outside world (ie, restaurants, school, babysitter's, etc. ) and how to comfort you and your child and help deal with the anxiety, stress and depression that often occurs with food allergies.

It has sections on explaining eczema, asthma and environmental allergies, which my son also has. It was a very informative and comforting book in helping me deal with my son's allergies.

I recommend it to anyone and everyone who have children with food allergies!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must buy for a parent of a food allergic child, September 9, 2001

This review is from: The Parent's Guide to Food Allergies: Clear and Complete Advice from the Experts on Raising Your Food-Allergic Child (Paperback)
I can not say enough about this wonderful book. When my child was first diagnosed with food allergies I was extremly stressed out. I came on-line and read as much as I could and purchased several books to learn how to cope. This book offers real life solutions for parents who can not stop their entire lives. The author makes suggestions on how to survive day to day as well as on vacations and at birthday parties. She offers several recipes for kid food and everything I have tried has been great. This is the best, most comprehensive book on the subject.

This review is from: The Parent's Guide to Food Allergies: Clear and Complete Advice from the Experts on Raising Your Food-Allergic Child (Paperback)
I have read several books, and this one is the best. The book contains useful information for explaining the different types of food allergies, and chances for outgrowing these allergies. It also offers sympathy for parents of kids with food allergies and let's you know you are not alone in your fears and struggles. Most importantly, the book has GREAT recipes that are easy to make that the whole family will enjoy. I regulary make the zucchini and banana breads for my dairy and egg allergic son to take to school for snacks. Terrific book!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Soothing Support in Plain English, June 16, 2001
This review is from: The Parent's Guide to Food Allergies: Clear and Complete Advice from the Experts on Raising Your Food-Allergic Child (Paperback)
What can you say about a book that is endorsed by the leading authority in the field and is yet written in a manner that even a non-science type like me found 100 percent accessible? It's about time someone filled this gap!! This book gave us the information we needed, in beautifully written, plain English, to both get our son the treatment he needed and to live with the allergies it was finally determined he had. Since both my husband and I have an intolerance to dairy we were told that my son's excessive vomiting was due to an intolerance to dairy. After reading The Parent's Guide, I learned that his symptoms were consistent with those of an allergic reaction. Armed with this knowledge, we were ready to do battle with the managed care gatekeepers and demand that he see a specialist. The allergist we saw found that our son is indeed allergic to dairy along with several other foods. And thanks to this book, I understood the process the doctors took my son through to come to this conclusion. When given the diagnosis we felt somewhat vindicated because like many parents with food allergic children "we just knew what the problem was" but then what do you do? Thanks to The Parent's Guide we knew what questions to ask the dietician and how to survive in a world where dairy foods appear to be everywhere!! This is a book that should be given to every school district and to every allergic child's teachers! I also believe this book would be useful to other psychologists like myself, who work with adolescents and families. We are giving a copy to our pediatrician so that she will know how to help other parents like us and to our parents who have even less understanding about allergies than we did and are not even sure they want to know more. This book is a wonderful guide; reading The Parent's Guide to Food Allergies is like sharing with a more knowledgeable friend.

Many thanks to Marianne Barber for giving us this extremely informative, practical, easy to read book! Discovering that your child has life threatening food allergies is overwhelming to say the least. Now we individually don't have to "reinvent the wheel" on our own. This book will save many parents and caregivers so much time by telling us what to expect, what works, what doesn't, how to handle difficult situations such as birthday parties, eating out, etc. This book will be a well worn, dog-eared, treasured reference in homes for years to come.

I can't recommend this book enough. After your doctor so casually recommends eliminating multiple foods from your childs diet- it soaks in. The news is lifestyle altering.
This book, co-written by a practicle mom, and MD, is wonderfully written and well organized. It is a must. It is a guide on how to live with allergies. It includes information from allergy testing, hidden ingredients, types of allergic responses, preventing allergies in your next child, and recipes. It was the first book a purchased on the subject, and I refer to it often.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is my Allergy Bible !!!, June 26, 2006

This review is from: The Parent's Guide to Food Allergies: Clear and Complete Advice from the Experts on Raising Your Food-Allergic Child (Paperback)
I have a son who has chronic ezcema and food allergies. I have been to several allergists (and am still searching for the perfect one) and none of them has been as much help to me yet as this book. I went into food allergies knowing something but not enough, as I quickly and clearly learned from the book. I was able to stock my kitchen, pack my diaper bag, and feel prepared when ordering out because of the help I got here.

The author is both clear and down-to-earth, skipping the "over medical" lingo and speaking real, clear language to mothers (and fathers) who have children with food allergies. She empathizes with the situation you are in, and also addresses the SEVERITY food allergies have and helps you take the right precaution when eating out.

I HIGHLY recommend this book as a starting point and launching pad for any mother who suspects or knows food allergies might be a problem for thier child. Please read this and don't get scared, get prepared !!!! It helped me take on this challenge I have as a mother of a child with such a life altering condition.

5.0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL FOR PARENTS DEALING WITH MULTIPLE FOOD ALLERGIES!!, December 23, 2003

This review is from: The Parent's Guide to Food Allergies: Clear and Complete Advice from the Experts on Raising Your Food-Allergic Child (Paperback)
I have read many things about food allergies and this book is by far the most complete reference I have found on the subject. My allergist said the forward is written by one of the foremost authorities in allergies and he wouldn't endorse anything that wasn't excellent. This book goes beyond diagnosing and handling food allergies by also discussing other problems frequently encountered by food allergic children, such as eczema, dust mite allergies, and environmental allergies. It is extremely well-written and easy to read. It is especially helpful for parents, like me, dealing with children who have multiple food allergies. If your child has food allergies, you should buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great first resource for parents and family of newly diagnosed children with Food Allergies., October 24, 2005
This review is from: The Parent's Guide to Food Allergies: Clear and Complete Advice from the Experts on Raising Your Food-Allergic Child (Paperback)
This book came recommended by my daughters allergist after she was diagnosed with egg and peanut allergies. She also has eczema. It is a great resource written in simple terms. This book provides clear information on a broad spectrum of food, skin and respiratory allergies. I purchased the book for all of the grandparents too. It's been very helpful to my family in understanding how we can keep my daughter healthy and safe.

I purchased this book, so I could get a better understanding of my son's tree nut and shellfish allergies. This book was so informative, from understanding what an allergy is, to how to handle an allergic reaction.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves someone with a food allergy. Where I started out feeling helpless and scared, I put the book down, feeling empowered. By feeling confident and educated, I feel my son will be safer.
