Best book for the novice 'horse mother',
By Gincy Bucklin (Gincy@brainiac.com) (Rhode Island, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Parent's Guide to Horseback Riding (Paperback)
This is one of the most useful books I have seen in a long time. It answers virtually all the questions that the non-horsey parent might have about riding. It covers choosing a stable and an instructor, when--and if!--to buy a horse for your child, things the parent should know how to do, what to expect of lessons, what horse shows are about, etc. etc. I would recommend that everyone who teaches young pupils keep a supply of 'The Parent's Guide to Horseback Riding' in her stable, and hand them out to the parents of every new pupil. Even if you give them away, they will be worth every penny of the investment in time saved and misunderstandings avoided.

Great Book for Prospective Horse Owners,
By Laura Terry (Evansville, Indiana) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Parent's Guide to Horseback Riding (Paperback)
Parents should read this book BEFORE they buy the horse. Dr. Jahiel can help you decide whether or not you (and your child) are ready for the joys and responsibilities of horse ownership. Her good humored and sometimes humerous advice will help families make the best decisions for caring for and enjoying their new horses.

A must have for parents of riders.,
By LarkBaum (Bournemouth, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Parent's Guide to Horseback Riding: New Edition (Paperback)
If you are feeling a little insecure about your lack of knowledge of horses and riding--especially safety issues--but you really care about the safety of your kids around horses and their learning experience, this is the book for you. There is no other resource like it and it will help you discern good practices from bad.

I would recommend this to a young new horse enthusiast. My daughter loved reading it before getting her first horse.

I am a riding instructor, involved in the local Pony Club, and this is a great book. It is easy to read and it explains to non-horsey parents the important role they will have in their kids riding/horse loving career.
