Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

A sequel and companion to Parents' Guide to Raising a Gifted Child (LJ 8/85), this too is a digest of articles, research reports, and advice from Gifted Children Monthly . The new guide, however, contains original work by Alvino on emotional needs, perfectionism and the superbaby scourge, and gender-specific issues, and essays by Dr. David Elkind and Fred Rogers of Mister Roger's Neighborhood. Topics include stress management for children. Games, projects, and puzzles for home use, suggestions for enriching museum visits and introducing mathematics, science, and logic, and descriptions of resource materials are provided. Parents and preschool teachers will find much help here. Literary Guild alternate.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book For the Parents of Gifted Toddlers, March 1, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Parents' Guide to Raising a Gifted Toddler: Recognizing and Developing the Potential of Your Child from Birth to Five Years (Hardcover)
This book is excellant! I have bought many books on gifted children and this is one of the best. This book is especially great if you have a gifted toddler. It will tell you everything from identification procedures (has a check list)to what the ramifications could be in a child whose talents are waisted because of being overlooked (it can lead to deliquency and depression in adolesence). This book will guide you on how to deal with everyday situations and has suggestions on activities as well as how to focus and develop the emotional needs of this high demand child. This book is a must have your money will not be waisted!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Diversity of Viewpoints, July 28, 2011

This book is decidedly NOT a book to teach parents how to drill their children so that they pass preschool entrance exams and get on the right track to an Ivy League education. In fact, an entire chapter of this book stresses how important it is for parents to not put inappropriate pressure on their gifted preschooler. This is what makes the book such a refreshing read. It is a collection of articles more or less organized into chapters, but representing a range of viewpoints. Some of the advice is really practical, such as the section talking about the need to make sure gifted children, who tend to be very curious, are taught what to do if they get lost in the woods. Other advice is more philosophical and talks about how to straddle the line of pushing your child enough to stave off boredom, but also allow your child enough room to remain appropriately childish. Some of the articles talk about issues that are not even exclusively issues for parents of gifted children. My main concern about my own child is to make sure that he grows up a balanced individual, and I think this book has given me some good ideas that have helped me think about the ways I talk to and deal with my child.

This review is from: Parents' Guide to Raising a Gifted Toddler: Recognizing and Developing the Potential of Your Child from Birth to Five Years (Hardcover)
This is a great resource for mothers of gifted toddlers - you know deep down that your little one is different, and this is a great resource to help guide not only yourself, but your little tike in the right direction without pressure. Book is not in the typical library system so i was pleased to find it on amazon.
