Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book should not only be required reading for parents with kids in high school, it should be required reading for every parent before their kids start school. There is little doubt if most parents would take the time to read this valuable little tome, the school experience for kids would be a far better one."

 --- San Francisco Book Review

"Rashoff uses her considerable experience (33 years as a high school counselor) to provide practical advice in this no-nonsense guidebook for parents and students. Rashoff's tone is compassionate but firm, and she uses snappy, memorable comparisons to get her points across, while employing advice from families who have successfully navigated high school."

--- Publishers Weekly

From the Back Cover

Thanks to her 33 years of dedicated work as a high school guidance counselor, few education professionals are better qualified than author Karyn Rashoff to identify, analyze and resolve the complex interactions between students, their parents, and their teachers, tutors and coaches. Nearly 20,000 counseling interactions have pointed to specific behaviors for school success.

The school counselor's job is to reconcile the sometimes disparate desires of students and those of their parents and educators. This goal is difficult to reach under the best of conditions, yet the author's keen observations of history, eartbreak and hope have yielded a book that will most certainly help to guide parents, comfort students, and encourage educators.

This unique book makes major contributions to fundamental aspirations of personal growth, eventual career success, and societal harmony. And education is the key to it all.

WOW! Karyn Rashoff wrote an amazing book chock full of excellent advice to help both children and parents succeed in the difficult teen years. While this specifically addresses difficulties and solution for problems in high school, it also has a wealth of information for parents of younger children. I have an 8th grade student, and I wish I had the opportunity to read this book several years ago to help instill certain study habits when she was younger.

Advice is given in this book by many people including professionals who have worked in the school system for numerous years as well as parents who have successfully raised their children to become successful adults. There is a section where students explain what their parents did to help them thrive and a section that offers tips to help parents create a better study environment. There is also information from people of other cultures as to what they find helpful along with ideas to help those new to American schools, and finally how to successfully plan for college.

The teen years can certainly be tumultuous. This is a great book that offers a lot of wisdom from many people in numerous situations. I think every parent can gain a lot of insight into their child and how to best encourage them to do their best by reading this book. It is obvious that Karyn wants all young adults to become the best they can be and with this book, parents have a much higher probability of helping their child flourish!

5.0 out of 5 stars Needs to be a prerequisite for parents October 31, 2014
Format:Paperback
If I could give this book more stars I would. I know this book is geared towards parents whose children are in high school, but I would recommend this book to anyone with school aged children. There are so many scenarios that effect my children now even though they are in elementary school. "Parents in Highschooland" gives great suggestions on how to make your life easier with your school aged children. I really enjoyed that Karyan Rashoff included stories from people she has encountered and how they dealt with different situations throughout their life and school. The chapter called parents don't do these things really hit home for me. That specific chapter made me notice that I could word things differently that would benefit both my children and myself.
The book itself was a pleasure to read and transitioned easily from one chapter to the next. I wish this book was a prerequisite for a parents to have before their children start school.
I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful Advice October 2, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Parents in Highschooland offers extensive and useful advice for parents raising high school age teens. The author has years of experience working as a high school guidance counselor, and her experience really shows in her advice. The book covers many different topics like how to get you kid to enjoy school, how to help them develop good study and work habits, and how to prepare for college, with all topics aiming to help you raise a successful student.

I thought that the book had a lot of helpful information and I really liked that the author included a lot of anecdotes from students and parents. I thought it made the advice more accessible and true to life. There was a lot of insight from the parents and students that help show what really is important for teens to focus on while in high school to ensure academic and future success.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing advice for parents of high schoolers!!! October 31, 2014
Format:Paperback
What a great tool for parents of all aged children. Karyn Rashof has done an amazing job of putting her professional and personal expertise in print. In "Parents in Highschoolland" she gives so much useful advice to parents with teens entering in these very stressful years. She touches on so many important subject matters and I love that there are stories from other experienced educators, parents, and students. She has definitely succeeded in creating a book that is chock full of advice on how to make your child a successful student as well as prepare them for the future. Although my daughter still has a few years until she enters high school, I am so glad that I came across this book now so I can put some of the things I learned into practice and help her be as successful as possible. I will be lending this book to a few friends who NEED this book desperately!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Guide for Parents! September 11, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is full of excellent information not only for high school parents but for all parents who strive to raise successful students I feel. The stories and advice given here from parents, students, teachers, counselors, and others are put together in an easy to read format. The thought provoking questions at the end of each chapter reinforce what the author is trying to get across with each section. "Successful parenting doesn't depend on family income or the educational level of the parents. Instead, success comes from establishing and maintaining a consistent policy-one that both the parent(s) and student(s) fully agree upon-plus lots of loving reinforcement." I definitely recommend this fabulous book to all parents. Thank you for sharing Karyn!
