Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

According to the American Psychiatric Association, three to five percent of all children have some degree of Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a condition characterized by impulsive behavior, hyperactivity, and an inability to pay attention. The Hyperactivie Child Book and The Parents' Hyperactivity Handbook: Helping the Fidgety Child are welcome additions to the growing body of literature on ADHD and related disorders. Both works feature thorough coverage of the main issues associated with ADHD, including diagnosis, treatment, discipline, and strategies designed to manage and improve behavior. In both works, factual information is underscored by the basic tenet that positive feedback and support are critical to the health and progress of children with ADHD. They differ, however, in the presentation of their material. The Hyperactive Child Book is written collaboratively by a pediatrician, a child psychologist, and the mother of a child with ADHD. It focuses on ADHD children from preschool through young adulthood, emphasizing practical information and advice, which is supported with numerous concrete examples and case studies. For example, an excellent section on how to serve as an advocate for a child features specific suggestions for dealing with the schools and developing an individualized education plan (IEP), including sample dialogs, charts, and rating scales. The prose style throughout is informed yet always accessible. In The Parents' Hyperactivity Hand book , clinical psychologist Paltin emphasizes research studies and theoretical models. While the work is extemely well written, the erudite tone and psychological terminology make the information a bit difficult to absorb. Parents with limited time and attention will appreciate the clear, concise, and pragmatic nature of The Hyperactive Child Book , making it the more appropriate choice for parent/child collections in public and school libraries. Academic libraries should consider The Parents' Hyperactivity Book for its extensive research and scholarly presentation.
