Book Description

July 8, 2003

The author of Choice Theory and Reality Therapy offers a powerful approach for helping troubled teens.

In his decades as a therapist, Dr William Glasser has often counselled parents and teenagers. His advice has healed shattered families and changed lives. Now in his first book on the lessons he has learned, he asks parents to reject the 'common sense' that tells them to 'lay down the law', ground teens, or try to coerce them into changing behaviour. These strategies have never worked, asserts Dr Glasser, and never will. Instead he offers a different approach based upon Choice Theory. Glasser spells out the seven deadly habits parents practiSe and then shows them how to accomplish their goals by changing their own behaviour. Above all, he helps parents keep their relationship with their child strong. Dr Glasser provides a groundbreaking method that any parent can use with confidence and love.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Parents Struggling with Teens, February 3, 2005
By
David R Law (Ottawa, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: For Parents and Teenagers: Dissolving the Barrier Between You and Your Teen (Paperback)
William Glasser's book provides valuable insight into the dynamics of parent-teen relationships, and he offers a jargon-free approach that focuses on building the relationship. Glasser offers no magic formula, but parents reading this book will gain a better understanding of their teenager, and, more importantly, begin to understand why the things they are doing now aren't working, and what they might be able to do instead. When neither permissive parenting nor "tough love" have worked (they seldom do, in the long run), this book offers a third way. After reading it, the approach just makes so much sense: at its core is a fundamental approach to all positive relationships, in fact.

5.0 out of 5 stars Parenting Teenagers Made Easy!, December 30, 2007

This review is from: For Parents and Teenagers: Dissolving the Barrier Between You and Your Teen (Paperback)
When I took a dog training class I was told that it was "I" who needed to change and if I did so properly, the dog would behave as I wanted. Well, Glasser's book basically says the same thing and it's true!

This book was recommended by a counselor and we highly recommend reading it as it helps you think about things differently, not only with your teen but others. Glasser is now a favorite author of ours.
