I have been doing family therapy for 15+ years. This is by far the best book I have ever seen for parents of teenagers. I almost always recommend it. And I sure wish I had had it to read when my kids were teens. The biggest problem is it's hard to find. Now that I see that Amazon has it, that's no longer a problem.

3.0 out of 5 stars A self evaluation
I found this book to be more of a self evaluation of oneself. I found it frequently brought up memories from my childhood experiences , some O.K., some not. Lots of self evaluation questions. It made me think some of the difficulties I was experiencing with my childs behavior stemmed from my own reactions based on my experiences. It is very hard to detach oneself from...

5.0 out of 5 stars Straightforward, clearly written guide to working with teens, August 23, 1998

This review is from: Parents, Teens and Boundaries: How to Draw the Line (Paperback)
Useful for parents or anyone working with teens, this book provides ideas, situation descriptions and creative solutions to problems with homework, peer pressure, curfews and communication. Sensible solutions are suggested, sources for further information are provided. Very readable. This is one of those "why didn't I know about this book earlier" texts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good ideas for raising kids of all ages, January 24, 1999

This review is from: Parents, Teens and Boundaries: How to Draw the Line (Paperback)
An empowering book for parents. Written in an easy-to-read conversational text, this book has plenty of good ideas. It teaches how to raise children without using anger, judgment or manipulation. It even includes suggested exercises so that you can use what you learn in a very personal way. I'd recommend it! 5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, caring book for parents of children of all ages., September 27, 1996

I really enjoyed reading this book. I thought the author's discussion of the subject was clear, concise and made (practical) sense. She paints a picture that is full of hope not the doom and gloom most people speak of when talking about today's teens

It is very hard to detach oneself from your own history. It does bring up some good points but I do not agree with a few items. It seems to refer mostly to older teens and not as much to younger teens ( 13-14). It does get you thinking though and so one can get good things from it.

I have been a therapist in private practice for over twenty years working mostly with teens and their parents. This book is very well written, and I would recommend it to struggling parents. Setting limits and finding the strength to set them, with today's demanding teen takes work! Ms. Bluestein shows us how.

Before my kids hit their teens, I thought that only bad parents had trouble with their teenagers. All parents of teens will be out there laughing at this thought -- including me.
Dr. Bluestein's book is practical, respectful of both teens and parents, and realistic. She gives sensible ideas about setting boundaries in ways that don't lead to strife or focus on parental emotions.
My advice: read this book before your kids reach their teens, so you'll have the skills you need and the family dynamic you want when the time comes.
Dr. Bluestein has a website at [...] where you can read articles and excerpts and hear her podcasts. I listened, and then I could hear her comforting, down-to-earth voice while I read her book. It was like having a wise friend there with me -- something parents of teens can really use.

After a trying time with our 14 year old daughter I purchased this book. Always a great student and kiddo we had a "speed bump" when we disagreed with a boy she wanted to "go with" that we forbid. It got really ugly, really quickly. This book not only showed me what I had done that could be done differently but really helped me understand more about my own parenting styles, where they came from, and her perspective. We are implementing a lot of these strategies and I am so thankful I bought this book. I WILL be rereading.

I have a 17 year old son whose mercurial tempers and selfishness make Kim Jong Il look like a nice guy in comparison. I don't normally turn to self help books but felt I needed some perspective on how my once adorable son could now be at times so awful. This book achieved that, in that it gave some useful pointers on how to manage teenagers and most importantly helped me direct my thinking about the issues in a very focused way. It will not cure the situation but it does help to reinforce your confidence and hopefully avoid some tension along the way!
