3.0 out of 5 stars Needs some work July 10, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It's a little hard for me to determine the intended audience for this book. In a series of vignettes covering Napoleon III's reconstruction of Paris, World War II, the French Revolution, cuisine, the May 68 protests, and modern immigrant community riots, the author describes some aspects of Parisian life and gives a (very) brief background about a few city landmarks. The selected stories were interesting, but overall the book was too short, not well organized, required more background knowledge from the reader than I would have expected, and some of the formatting was off (e.g. section headings in a faint white font on the iPad which appeared not at all on the actual Kindle device).

1.0 out of 5 stars This book is not good at all November 25, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The problem with summarizing a great city like Paris is that you'll invariably leave something out. That's fine, but a bunch of disjointed snippets don't really provide information. For example, the unfortunate 2005 riots get more words than the French Revolution and other defining moments in the history of Paris.

It comes down to this: Even if the book was free, do yourself a favor and go to Wikipedia and you'll learn more and get a more coherent collection of information.

3.0 out of 5 stars thought it would have more March 19, 2014

It seems to be more focused on Paris' contemporary history. That said, it was somewhat helpful to have a perspective on the evolution of paris
