4.0 out of 5 stars Satchmo Live in Paris, 1962, June 8, 2009
This review is from: Paris Jazz Concert 1962 (Audio CD)
Satchmo toured and recorded extensively during the last decade of his life, and this 1962 concert is document to that. Recorded April 24th at the Olympia in Paris, this is what a typical concert appearance of Armstrong would have looked/sounded like.

His trumpet playing still has some fire in it, especially considering his age, and his vocals are as strong as ever! He is backed up by Trummy Young (trombone), Joe Darensbourg (clarinet), Billy Kyle (piano), Billy Cronk (bass), Danny Barcelona (drums), and Jewel Brown is featured on vocals on several tracks. This group sounds lively and upbeat, as does Armstrong, who interacts with the audience throughout this concert. Extended solos are featured by each member of the group on several tracks.

If you are a Louis Armstrong collector or enthusiast, this recording is definetly for you! This is a testament to how great Satchmo sounded right up to the year of his death. This recording has good sound and has a long running time of 76 minutes. Pick it up! (this album has been released under different labels and titles, so search for all of the words in the title: Paris Jazz Concert - Olympia: April 24, 1962)

Recorded on april 24 1962 at the OLYMPIA de PARIS,this live set is enjoyable, but can not be considered a classic.Highlights for me are OLE MISS from W.C.HANDY and THE FAITHFUL HUSSAR(LOUIS actually says that he picked it up in DUSSERDOLF).He plays some familiar numbers of his repertoire like WHEN IT SLEEPY TIME DOWN SOUTH,A KISS TO BUILD A DREAM ON and BLUEBERRY HILL.STRUTTIN' WITH SOME BARBECUE,a famous instrumental from the HOT FIVE,HOT SEVEN days is done at a slow tempo.HIGH SOCIETY is of course the title track of the 1956 movie.NOBODY KNOWS THE TROUBLE I'VE SEEN is beautifully sung in a straight fashion.Obviously,LOUIS was very fond of this song. The inévitable MACK THE KNIFE ,that was recorded by everyone from DARIN to SINATRA and FITZGERALD closes the disc.So as the man often says, this is not a bad recording, but it belongs in the collection of a true SATCHMO fanatic.
