Randy the Bop trumpeter,
By Jazzcat "stef" (Genoa, Italy Italy) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Paris By Night (Audio CD)
This album contains the music played by Randy during a concert in Paris in a club called "La Villa" in the april of 1992. With Randy played Daniel Humair and the Doky brothers, Niels Lan and Chris Minh (piano and bass respectively). I'm really happy about this disc because Randy is a player that I admire greatly and unfortunatly in few occasions, I may say from his discography, he has played and recorded in a small combo format a straight jazz and bebop repertoire (that is the situation where you can enjoy a player at the fullest in my opinion). This is what happened that night in Paris. Randy played great bop lines out of the Skunk Funk realm, with a touch of his trademark modernity here and that's just the reason why I love this record in particular. It's pure Bebop here. The trio follows him properly and with a good intention but clearly the star here is Randy. The program is made entirely by standards and jazz originals like Dizzy's "Blue'n'Boogie" and a tune written by Niels Lan Doky, the beatiful "Dreams". This record is not an easy find being an italian small company record from 15 years ago: "Soul Note" is the record company, a brand that I don't know if it even still exist. But if you find it maybe on the used market here on Amazon (at present moment there's a copy at 8 dollars) I think it can be a nice addiction to any serious jazz collection, a nice night by an extremely gifted player.
