These two new volumes in the "Timeless Places" series (which also includes guides on Tuscany and Provence) can only be highly praised for their sparkling photographs and reasonable price. Paris is a city of remarkable architecture, great art, enticing foods, and lush parks. Each of the many areas that make up the city has a distinctive character: Montmartre has picturesque streets and cafes that draw artists and seekers of nightlife, while the elegant Ile St. Louis offers a quiet oasis in the middle of the Seine. Almost every photograph in the guide makes use of the unique quality of light that has attracted so many great artists to Paris. Although many of the shots are of the traditional tourist attractionsDthe Louvre, M tro signs, the Left Bank, and Sacr CoeurDmany others are street scenes, balconies, and shops, and all show an original eye, although the work of several different photographers is used. The photographs of Venice are equally unique and play up both the role of water and the predominance of color in a city whose architecture harks back to the time of its supremacy on the seas. I was looking for some nice postcards or a small book with nice pictures of Paris. I'm very glad I found this one. Beautiful, not ordinary, colorful photographs printed on good paper; some history of Paris and words of love to that City. Photography books are so expensive! But look at this, it's a bargain.

Judith Mahoney Pasternak understands Paris: she not only is well-schooled in the history of the City of Lights, she is also acquainted with the intimate side of Paris. This is the type of book that will prepare the nascent visitor to Paris with an insider's view and will also substitute for a personal scrapbook for frequent visitors. The book is divided into two parts: L'Histoire (with sections on 'The City of Yesterday', 'A City of the Mind', 'A City of the Senses', and 'The Living City') and Les Images. The photography is atmospheric, elegant and informative, mixing the requisite grand buildings with intimate photos of the Parisians sitting along the Seine, wrapping cheeses, in the flea markets. This book truly contains the spirit of Paris and belongs in every traveller's library.
