There's certainly no deceptive advertising going on here - "Paris: Women and Bikes" is a photo collection of women pedaling around the gorgeous City of Light. The cover cyclist aside, the theme isn't glamour in spite of riding but rather the understated chic and cool of riders as they go about their daily errands. (Of course, being mainly French the women have a certain glamour without trying, curse them!)
There's no lycra or spandex to be seen, and strangely for the home of the Tour, no drop bar racers. If you're thinking of adding bicycling to your workdays or weekends this book is inspiring. If you're already a rider the photos affirm what you already know about fun, pleasure and practicality. The women are all ages - there's no excuse to not give riding a try!
Postscript - the photographer of these wonderful images is Gil Garcetti, former Los Angeles District Attorney. His son, Eric, has just been elected mayor of Los Angeles. Will the son be as pro- urban biking as his Dad? J'espere! (I hope so!)
The photographs are full of life, the women of all ages, the backgrounds rich with beauty. It is wonderful to see the many seasons, sense the different walks of life of all the women, and the hum and buzz of romantic, lovely Paris. I ordered this book for myself a couple of years ago. I look at it often as it makes me happy, inspires me to ride my own bike, encourages me to accomplish my errands on my bicycle, whizzing and whooshing along the streets, in spite of the fact I live in flat, dull suburban L.A.! But now when I ride, I enjoy picturing Gil Garcetti's enchanting photographs, the spirit of Paris and the women riders, and I am suddenly riding along the Champs Elysee with an air of a certain "je ne sais quois!!"! I have given this book to many many of my friends, all of whom say they LOVE it and also have taken to riding their bicycles far more often!! Wonderful book, not to be missed!
