5.0 out of 5 stars Info taken from the inside jacket flap, November 15, 2010
This review is from: Parisian Lives (Hardcover)
Set in the last lovely years of Europe before World War II, Samuel M. Steward's new novel tells the story of Sir Arthur Lyly, the last and most notorious protégé of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. Nostalgic yet psychologically acute, Steward chronicles the strange interconnection between Sir Arthur's rising career as a painter and his increasingly dangerous and desperate sexual passions - for a Chicago gangster, a disturbed British sailor, a young Parisian tough, and a Spanish peasant boy.

Woven through and around the story is an enchanting evocation of the French countryside, the Paris bohemian scene of the late thirties, and the domestic humor and life of Gertrude and Alice, whose voices are caught with such uncanny precision that both women spring to life on the page.

(Above from the front inside jacket flap. Below from the back inside jacket flap.)

Samuel M. Steward has been both a professor of literature and a tattoo artist, as well as author of a number of novels and "Dear Sammy: Letters from Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas." He lives in Berkley, California.
