scattergories is great; the "updated" game design is not,

If you love Scattergories, you're sure to be disappointed by all the corners cut to bring you the latest version of this game.
Rather than adding further comments about how fun, enjoyable, and entertaining the game concept itself is, I feel the need to point out some of the "features" of the new game packaging and setup that I was so upset about with my recent purchase. For some reason, even though the game's price is at least as high as it has always been (if not higher!) the quality of the game is much lower now. The "folders" where you slide in your list and answer sheets are of quite poor quality--they are now made of a very thin cardboard into which you slide a plastic strip and then fold the corrugated spine into place. I can't imagine that this game will last more than about a year, if that, before it is really beat up and potentially torn up. The lists are tiny, harder to read, and far more flimsy than in previous editions. Even if you're a fan of the new layout (clipping the list and answer sheet into place rather than using a pad and slipping the list behind it), the new folders are less user friendly than the original versions, especially for those with less dexterity, such as kids and older adults. In addition, I agree with a previous reviewer about the ridiculousness of the current battery setup in the buzzer; his review outlines the details of that issue quite nicely. I could go on, but rather than continuing this rant, I will simply add a final note to all fellow Scattergories fans: BEWARE. If you, like me, have not "updated" your game in years, I highly recommend keeping what you've got and not wasting thirty bucks. What a letdown...

Parker Brothers should be ashamed. This is planned obsolescence at its best. We love this game and have for many years, but ours was getting worn out. I should have read the reviews! For the MUCH higher price, the quality and timer suck. I returned it because I knew it would have been shot after a few uses. I found an older, used one for $3 in great shape at a garage sale.
Too bad I didn't video the quality difference.

Mind boggling. You have a few minutes to think of words from a set of 12 categories all starting with the same letter. Try to think something creative and unique that the others won't guess as well. Double letters like 'Captain Crunch' will earn you double the points.
I was playing it yesterday with a group of 8 people. The game comes with only 6 pads and 6 sets of cards so we decided to team up in pairs. It worked out better than expected. We rolled the lettered-die, set the timer and ran to our corners.

I love the original Scattergories and was a little hesitant to order this updated version because of a couple reviews about the changes from the original, but I went ahead and ordered. When it arrived and we opened it up and saw the plastic parts and smaller cards we started throwing it back in the box and saying I'm sending it back. But then we really wanted to play so we gave it a shot and assembled it and we actually like it as much, if not more than the original. It is different than the original, but not worse and still plays the same way. I like that you have everything you need assembled in each unit and that the pencils hook in. I love that there are new categories!
This is a really fun game and so simple that people of almost all ages and abilities can play together. If we have someone that we know will get creamed playing against others, we just team up and make it more even. I find this timer less intrusive that the other one and I think it was a brilliant choice to make it where you can adjust the time limit on it between 1, 2 or 3 minutes. That way if you have a pretty easy to use letter you can stick with two minutes, but if it's a harder one you can set it at three minutes or whatever time limits you find fits. This is one of our all time favorite games, up there with Cranium and Taboo.

Scattegories is a fun game and helps you sharpen your divergent thinking skills that are useful for creativity. Other reviews have done a fine job praising the product.
My gripe is with the electronic timer/buzzer. Why does Hasbro feel the need to include useless electronic gadgets with a board game? This is an annoying trend in general because you get no added benefit with all the frustrations of electronics: - Needs AAA batteries - Batteries will corrode if you don't use the game for a long time - Need a screwdriver to access the battery compartment - Timer makes distracting ticking noises while you're trying to concentrate - Provides no visual indication of progress - You have to flip it upside down to reset it, but you don't get any visual feedback on whether the reset was successful. Useless. Why? An egg does a better job with none of these problems. The first thing I did was toss the buzzer in the recycling bin and use my egg timer from Taboo. -1 star for the buzzer. Hey Hasbro: Function before Form. Lose the buzzer. Just give us an old fashioned egg timer instead. Thanks.

I am a college student and I absolutely love this game! It is fun to play with my boyfriend, family, or a bunch of friends! I think it's just as fun playing with 2 people as it is playing with 6 or more. Gameplay is easy to understand and is very fun and engaging. Basically, there are 16 lists and each list has 12 categories on it, such as "Name an acronym," "Name a sports team," "Name something you grab on your way out the door." You roll the die that has all the letters of the alphabet on it and say you get the letter "A." You set the timmer to the desired time, 3 minutes or less, and you are to come up with words that start with the letter "A" for each of the 12 categories of the list you are playing. It requires strategy, you can't have the same answer as anyone else, and also lots of thinking. Sometimes you come up with silly answers or vulgar ones, depending on who you play with, but it is always fun. It's great to see what you can come up with in such a short amount of time and you can play this game for hours on end! It's also nice that it is a short kind of game and only requires you to play 3 rounds. You add up 3 rounds to see who wins. Overall, a great game for all ages and I would reccommend to anyone!

To really compete, you have to learn to let your mind be open to a large flow of words. I think it's good excercise for the brain. Discussing the crazy things that pops into people's heads is the fun part. Won't work well if there are people in the group who are really into arguing because the rules leave some things up to a vote.

This game is sooo much fun. Especially if you play in large groups (more competition). Although it will take longer to get to the next round because you have to review everybody's answers to calculate your score for that round.
I gave it 4 stars for durability because the pieces are just cheap plastic pieces. |
