Full of hot air? Get some mileage out of it! Test your knowledge (real and/or make-believe) as well as your bluffing ability in this creative word game. There are five categories of questions (words, people, initials, movies, and dates). A question is selected from one of the categories and each player writes down an answer, either trying to answer the question correctly or hoping to bluff the other players with an inventive, believable-sounding answer. You score points for guessing the correct answer or fooling the others with your phony answer. Thinking cap required. --Alison Golder

Product Description

Who needs a dictionary when you can have more fun with your imagination? Take Parker Brothers' original Balderdash, add 4 more categories and you have Beyond Balderdash. When the leader draws a card with 1 of 2,400 words, people, initials, movies or dates on it, it's your turn to educate, or trick, your friends. Players make up a definition, mix it in with the real definition, and vote on the right answer. If enough people pick your definition enough of the time, you win. For 2 or more players, ages 10 to adult. Imported.

And guessing can be really tough, because sometimes the real answers are even wackier than anything you could ever think up.

My family and I enjoy playing this game very much. Expanding on the original concept of Balderdash (where players create phony dictionary definitions of obscure words and try to pick the correct one), this game adds new categories like dates, people, initials, and movie plots. The variety helps make the game even more fun, and keeps it from getting stale.
One of my favorite things about this game is that it continually surprises us how good our made-up answers are! You would think that you could guess pretty easily which answers were true and which were false, but it's not always that easy. We're not all creative geniuses either. We run the gamut from a college professor, to a high school student, to a nine-year child. Just about anyone can play this game and have a great time. (My only complaint is that you run out of answer slips too fast; you can just use plain paper, though.)

I first played Balderdash years ago and thought it was a great game. Each player created his/her own definitions for obscure words and tried to guess the correct definition. Since that time, another board game has been able to overtake Balderdash: Beyond Balderdash! Beyond Balderdash also contains words, but includes four additional categories:
People--the person's major accomplishment
Movie Titles--the basic plot of the movie
Dates--the event that happened on the date
Acronyms (my personal favorite)--what the initials stand for
The items in every category should be unfamiliar to most people, and the actual answers are sometimes stranger than player submissions. Discerning the correct answer is very difficult! This game is not a test to see who knows the most obscure words and history; rather it provides much amusement while building creativity. If you're a quick-thinking, creative person, you should love this game. If not, still play Beyond Balderdash; it will help! When you play Beyond Balderdash, it doesn't matter if you win or come in dead last. Making up responses and hearing other people's is so entertaining, you won't really care!

Beyond Balderdash is a great game to play at parties, especially if you have really creative friends. Sometimes, half the fun is not only trying to guess which answer is the real one, but who provided which bogus answer as well. But even if you don't think your friends are particularly clever, this game can bring out the creativity in just about anyone.
The best thing about the game is the way it's put together. The five different categories provide a fun mix -- from vocabulary words to dates, initials, movie titles and notable names. And guessing can be really tough, because sometimes the real answers are even wackier than anything you could ever think up. Plus, the question writers were smart enough to vary the syntax of the answers (some sound very intellectual, others, like, totally colloquial) so as to neutralize any unintentional clues you might get from your friends' writing styles.
You get the feeling that the people who put the game together had as much fun writing the questions as you'll have playing it.
I've played this game dozens of times, and every time I introduce someone new to it, they go out and buy their own copy afterwards. You won't be disappointed!

This is a totally new version of the original wordbluffing game. There's five categories to play When we played the words, people and movies categories were the favourites. All I can remember is being asked "Who is BERBEL ZUMNER?" The fake answers that everybody made up are too wild to print here but I can tell you the real answer from the game card; Large chested woman who was accidently killed when her reinforced metal bra was struck by lightning. Enough said. This game is great!

We love this game! Every time that we have played this with new people, they buy it for themselves and introduce it to others! It takes awhile to play the game, and the more people you have playing, the longer the game also. If you love trying to "pull one over" on your friends, this is the game. Regular balderdash is fun, but not as challenging. This game asks you to come up with events, and movie plot lines. This game is not for people looking for mindless fun. You have to have a sharp wit, some intelligence and the ability to write a good lie. A great gift for a new couple or college students!

At our Thanksgiving get-together we brought out Beyond Balderdash as a way to pass time while the turkey cooked. It was such a hit that we wolfed down the food to get back to the game!
One of the most appealing aspects of this game is that it can easily be tailored to your type of fun. Like competition? Use the game board and keep close track of points. It will satisfy even the fiercest competitor. Just want to have fun? Don't use the game board or points and just get a kick out of the bogus definitions or descriptions you & your friends will come up with. You'll probably be amazed at the creativity you never knew you had. Don't give up after the first couple tries - it can take a few attempts to get the hang of it.
What I found particularly interesting is that vocabulary, education, or smarts play relatively small roles. Those with extensive vocabularies, for example, are often easily spotted if they use the words that no one else knows. Write down too precise of a description, & it's another dead give-away. Many times the correct answer is the least likely of the bunch. Kids, therefore, can excel at this!
Beyond Balderdash is a great alternative to the original - which anyone could play with just a dictionary. Hopefully, they will soon come out with a booster set. If you find this game as hard to put down as we did, you'll soon need more cards!
