Product Description

Amazon.com

Full of hot air? Get some mileage out of it! Test your knowledge (real and/or make-believe) as well as your bluffing ability in this creative word game. There are five categories of questions (words, people, initials, movies, and dates). A question is selected from one of the categories and each player writes down an answer, either trying to answer the question correctly or hoping to bluff the other players with an inventive, believable-sounding answer. You score points for guessing the correct answer or fooling the others with your phony answer. Thinking cap required. --Alison Golder

Product Description

Who needs a dictionary when you can have more fun with your imagination? Take Parker Brothers' original Balderdash, add 4 more categories and you have Beyond Balderdash. When the leader draws a card with 1 of 2,400 words, people, initials, movies or dates on it, it's your turn to educate, or trick, your friends. Players make up a definition, mix it in with the real definition, and vote on the right answer. If enough people pick your definition enough of the time, you win. For 2 or more players, ages 10 to adult. Imported.

Durability: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
My family and I enjoy playing this game very much. Expanding on the original concept of Balderdash (where players create phony dictionary definitions of obscure words and try to pick the correct one), this game adds new categories like dates, people, initials, and movie plots. The variety helps make the game even more fun, and keeps it from getting stale.

One of my favorite things about this game is that it continually surprises us how good our made-up answers are! You would think that you could guess pretty easily which answers were true and which were false, but it's not always that easy. We're not all creative geniuses either. We run the gamut from a college professor, to a high school student, to a nine-year child. Just about anyone can play this game and have a great time. (My only complaint is that you run out of answer slips too fast; you can just use plain paper, though.)

5.0 out of 5 stars the most fun board game I have played September 4, 1999

Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I first played Balderdash years ago and thought it was a great game. Each player created his/her own definitions for obscure words and tried to guess the correct definition. Since that time, another board game has been able to overtake Balderdash: Beyond Balderdash! Beyond Balderdash also contains words, but includes four additional categories:

People--the person's major accomplishment

Movie Titles--the basic plot of the movie

Dates--the event that happened on the date

Acronyms (my personal favorite)--what the initials stand for

The items in every category should be unfamiliar to most people, and the actual answers are sometimes stranger than player submissions. Discerning the correct answer is very difficult! This game is not a test to see who knows the most obscure words and history; rather it provides much amusement while building creativity. If you're a quick-thinking, creative person, you should love this game. If not, still play Beyond Balderdash; it will help! When you play Beyond Balderdash, it doesn't matter if you win or come in dead last. Making up responses and hearing other people's is so entertaining, you won't really care!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best party game, hands down! November 13, 2001
Durability: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 3.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Beyond Balderdash is a great game to play at parties, especially if you have really creative friends. Sometimes, half the fun is not only trying to guess which answer is the real one, but who provided which bogus answer as well. But even if you don't think your friends are particularly clever, this game can bring out the creativity in just about anyone.

The best thing about the game is the way it's put together. The five different categories provide a fun mix -- from vocabulary words to dates, initials, movie titles and notable names. And guessing can be really tough, because sometimes the real answers are even wackier than anything you could ever think up. Plus, the question writers were smart enough to vary the syntax of the answers (some sound very intellectual, others, like, totally colloquial) so as to neutralize any unintentional clues you might get from your friends' writing styles.

You get the feeling that the people who put the game together had as much fun writing the questions as you'll have playing it.

I've played this game dozens of times, and every time I introduce someone new to it, they go out and buy their own copy afterwards. You won't be disappointed!
