I've been using traditional shaving methods with a brush and shaving soap for a couple of years. I had a cheap boar hair brush (Van der Hagen brand) that was starting to really lose lots of bristles. I decided to upgrade to a real badger brush. Badger hair was purported to have better softness and water retention capabilities as compared to boar hair. I did a considerable amount of research and reading on websites such as Badger and Blade. Coming to Amazon I did a search for pure badger hair brushes. There are a variety available. I chose the Parker brush with ebony handle because of the price and reviews of other Parker brushes. Even though there was no review for this particular brush, I was confident that the build-quality would be similar to Parker's other brushes as reviewed on Amazon.

I was not disappointed. The quality of the badger hair is excellent, very soft. The quantity of hair is excellent as well. I found the brush to hold lots of water, and was able to form excellent lathers using a very basic (some say substandard) soap, Williams brand. I've had the brush for two or three months now and it's lost perhaps 5 individual hairs. On my old brush, that many were lost each day. The handle has an excellent finish. I don't know if it's painted or if it's actually ebony with a clear finish, but it's beautiful. Seems very durable, but then I've not be too rough with it. The brush also came with a clear acrylic stand to suspend the brush, bristles down, to dry. The stand isn't fancy, but serves its purpose just fine. It was a bonus really, since lots of brushes don't come with stands. One ought to let his brush hang bristles down for proper drying, in my opinion.

Overall, this is an excellent brush, and a great value, considering the much higher prices one can find for badger brushes. I recommend this brush without reservation. I honestly have nothing negative to say about it.

When I made the shift to straight-razor shaving I was a little hesitant about the price that came with inital setup. I mean, 50+ bucks on shaving products ? really? I know its supposed to last for a while but still, come on guys... Yet my friend told me if I was gonna make the jump I had to start with quality products, since those would be the ones I'd be using for a very long time. This brush is on the sensible side of the spectrum, and it turned out great. Stiff enough to apply the shaving cream, soft enough to be flexible. It is just fantastic and I'm glad this was my first buy. A crappy brush would have just discouraged me from the whole process. A couple of the hairs did fall out (about 10) after the first few uses, but not anymore, its in great shape and feels good. Good buy for the beginner in my opinion

REASON FOR EDIT: didn't give it enough stars!

Through Amazon and with Parker's competitive pricing, this brush at $28.77 is equivalent to $80 brushes at specialty stores. I use mine with CO Bigelow Shave Cream (sourced from Proraso of Italy). Soaking the brush in hot water and stirring the shave cream in a cup creates a smooth, frothy lather that--once applied--makes for the smoothest, most enjoyable shaving experience with the closest, smoothest rash-free shaves I have ever had in 45 years of shaving. I have been using the 5-blade Gillette systems for 6 years now, and it was always a challenge getting a smooth shave without any catching or tugging. Not so anymore. This brush whooshes up the best lather and I get no pull or catching when drawing the 5-blade razor across my face.

As for the brush itself, the bristles are soft, smooth, and comfortable. I haven't lost one hair in three months. The brush is so absorbent that it is noticeably heavier when it soaks up the water. The handle is smooth, the brush is well balanced, and it has turned shaving--previously a somewhat uncomfortable chore--into a self-indulgent pleasure.

Two big thumbs up for this Parker ebony-handled pure badger shaving brush!

UPDATED REVIEW

I had a bad experience with this product at first. The brush separated from the head after just three weeks of normal use. I was able to repair it with epoxy easily enough, but the defect was disappointing to say the least.

My repair worked well, and after several months of daily use this brush remains a solid performer. And, for the record, the seller took the trouble to contact me and offer a replacement.

I've adjusted my initial rating upward to reflect both the usefulness of the brush and the seller's willingness to make things right. In the future I would order from Parker Safety Razor with confidence.

It took about a week of use to break this brush in. After that, the performance of this brush is everything I could want. Wonderful lather, the bristles are just the right balance between firmness and softness (in my personal opinion, I'm not an expert). After the first week break-in, it rarely sheds a hair. I have used this brush with both shaving soap and cream from a squeeze tube. I have used it with a double-edge razor and a cartridge razor. Some people collect shaving brushes, but I have no desire to try another brush. This one completely satisfies me.

I have been shaving using a brush and mug for over 30 years. I have never used a brush this nice. It instantly foams up the shaving cream and is very comfortable during application. It's almost a pleasure to shave in the morning.
