Editorial Reviews

Following sold-out singles on ADR and Static Caravan and an appearance on a Morr Music compilation, E*vax delivers his first full-length effort, Parking Lot Music. The album1s 11 tracks range from upbeat pop electronics to laid back melancholy numbers. The focus is certainly on the melodic, while each track also contains complex beat structures while maintaining a level of subtlety. Utilizing a wide variety of methods for sound manipulation, E*vax thrives on taking simple, everyday, household sounds and twisting them into rhythmic patterns. These patterns are then recontextualized and layered with melody to produce a subtle form of electro-acoustic music -- and yet despite all that, it1s pop music at heart.

I really love this album. It's minimal and precious, but by no means simple. It really deserves to be heard by as many people as possible. I think it's much better than his stuff with Ratatat, which is still pretty good.

Evan Mast has impressed me on two fronts recently. Teaming up with Mike Stroud on the Ratatat album and now here with Parking Lot Music. He once again has proven that he is one of the most original and talented programmers out there when it comes to downtempo music. His strength, without question, is in his completely original beats. They vibrate and snap in a syncopated fashion I've never heard before. On top of this he's added some incredibly well-written and unique keyboard melodies.

What it lacks is surprises. Dynamics and Tempo changes are almost entirely obsolete. Where this doesn't sound like anything important to anyone other than a music nerd, dynamics are what gives a lot of music its soul and the surprises they create are what keep you hooked. To often this album falls into the ambient structure of laying the ground work and keeping you there for a while. For those of you used to longwinded soundscapes and 9 minute ambient tracks will have no problem with this as most songs are in the 4 minute range.

On the bright side, I recommend this album over most of the downtempo techno out there. It's musically and technically sound as well as refreshing and unique. It just misses that little extra something to make it one of your favorite albums. I would recommend checking out Evan Mast's other project Ratatat for a similar feel that shines a little brighter.
