No other book available offers such a wealth of information on all types of recreational areas, including national parks, state parks, historic trails, and even urban parks, as this resource, first published in 1992. The term "directory" is quite correct; this is not a travel guide for the weekend wanderer but a nuts-and-bolts listing of important information about all areas of the country. A section of maps helps the reader to locate the areas, and there is a useful directory of addresses and phone numbers of state tourism offices. Besides being an invaluable reference tool for recreational information, this will also be helpful to patrons who are planning a move and who would like information about what to see and do in their new location. Essential for all reference collections.

Even though this book is dated 1995 it covers all national and state parks but also covers national forest, natio nal wildlife refuges and national scenic and historic trails. Almost nothing changes over the years to these listings. I would never pay $142 but for $12 you can't miss. It's a treasure trove of info.

Smith and Kay Gill. Covering more than five thousand national and state parks, the "Parks Directory Of The United States" also includes a wealth of other designated recreational, scenic and historic areas in both the United States and Canada. Also included such recreational areas, historic sites, battlefields, monuments, forests, preserves, memorials, seashores, trails, urban parks, and other miscellaneous recreational areas which are administered by federal land agencies and state park departments. Additionally, more than three hundred park and conservation organizations are listed with descriptive information. Of special interest are the identification of job and career opportunities with the National Park Service, the Forest Service, and the Fish & Wildlife Service; volunteer opportunities at national parks and federally protected lands; national park and protected lands entrance pass programs; the National Scenic Byways Program which covers all ninety-nine National Scenic Byways and the twenty-seven All-American Roads.
