Book Description

January 1998
Parkway Byways describes 5,000 miles of scenic drives close to the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Shenandoah National Park and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Author James R. Hinkel traveled more than 200,000 miles on winding country roads to discover the very best of the back country: picturesque villages and towns, waterfalls, lakes, historic sites, museums, and special parks.

A number of guidebooks tell about things to see and do on the Blue Ridge Parkway itself. Parkway Byways is different; it shares interesting attractions off the Parkway, extending into the countryside. Hinkel describes nineteen loop trips beginning at the Blue Ridge Parkway that feature the rich historical legacy of the region, including important buildings, battlefields, and beauty spots. Hinkel chose to list only non-profit attractions which are suitable for family vacations.

Breathtaking waterfalls, covered bridges, rustic campgrounds, and craft centers are featured in Parkway Byways. Hinkel drove into every nook and cranny of the Blue Ridge to find hundreds of notable stops. Detailed maps illustrate each chapter and make for easy navigation along the back roads. Photographs of many of the attractions described are included.

Loop drives range up to several hundreds of miles in length and there is excellent planning material for trips of two or three days. Some of the destinations are truly tiny and undiscovered -- like the town of Rapidan, Virginia, which changed hands fifteen times in the Civil War, and the 1916 Sinking Creek covered bridge near Newport, Virginia -- while old favorites such as Asheville, Charlottesville, and Roanoke yield new treasures.

About the Author

Jim Hinkel grew up in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains and came to North Carolina to design and build vacation homes. He was so impressed with the High Country that he began to "collect" scenic roads and towns like others might collect paintings and antiques. After so many years of personal pleasure, Jim decided it was time to share his discoveries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazed, August 6, 2007

Having purchased this product in 1999, I was ever so stunned to stumble upon the first, and only review, before today's comment. Moments ago, I was ordering a copy for a son stationed in the Army currently (coast of Virginia)and saw that the first rewiewer could not possibly have read the crystal clear Amazon.com book description. Furthermore, the author chose a blatantly clear title: Parkway Byways. According to my Oxford dictionary,a "byway" is a road or track not following a main route; a minor road or path, or a little-known area or detail.

Accordingly, the author did a dandy job in writting with this purpose.
Moreover, the author was kind enough to autograph my copy and, Mr. Hinkel shared his wisdom and experiences by way of e-mail, prior to my family trek.
Only wish I might have known about the first review years ago, and I might of clarified, then.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great detailed book, September 11, 2008
This review is from: Parkway Byways : 5,000 Miles Of Scenic Drives (Paperback)
For anyone wanting to 'blue line' (use roads that used to be colored blue on old interstate maps) in areas close to the Parkway, this is your book. Detailed info on all the wonderful scenic areas. I live in the Asheville area and can affirm the author's info is spot-on! A tremendous resource.

I'm planning a trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway this summer. I read discription of this book and it sounded good, but it was trips off the Parkway not the Parkway. It said the book was 1.5 inches thick, but it was 1/2 inch thick. The pictures in the book were not very good. After reviewing the book I returned it and ordered another book.
