5.0 out of 5 stars If Ever There Was A Musical Discovery Worth Making!, August 8, 2009
By
Parrish A. Highley "the_projectron" (Somewhere I've Never Travelled) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Parliament of Fooles (Audio CD)
Fulton J. Sheen often remarked that there are two images of every human being: the one we are supposed to be and the one we are. Those condemned to the Parliament of Fooles never reconciled the two with a faithfulness to their aspirations. So haunting are such thoughts that most will turn away rather than examine why their lives lack meaning or, more importantly, make the sacrifices necessary to live the true meaning of their individuality. That the weight of these melancholy dilemmas actually lift the music rather than bog it down in tedium is a real testament to not only the composers, but the musicians and vocalists as well.

The lyrics, the songcraft, and the prevalence of the human voice throughout this debut studio effort by Rubber Universe exceeded almost every expectation I had. Rather than contorting themselves to be radio-friendly, the artists firmly stand their ground and beckon radio to them. This is particularly true with the songs Dream Catcher and Let Me Rule Your Heart (Feat. Eric Woolfson) (for which there is an animated video on youtube) while album-oriented instrumentals like the saxophone laden Garden of Earthly Delights and We Insist (Place De Greve Mix) featuring the prolific cellist Zoe Keating are nothing short of stunning! Add to that three very distinguished gentlemen, songwriter Eric Woolfson, veteran guitarist Godfrey Townsend, and guitar virtuoso Ian Bairnson, who contribute a spoken word recitation, a blazing guitar solo on Nine Minutes Till Midnight (Feat. Godfrey Townsend), and a plethora of melodious guitar virtuosity throughout the closing epic Parliament of Fooles (Feat. Ian Bairnson), and you have the appeal icing on an already delicious piece of cake. This debut album by Rubber Universe is yet another reminder to every detractor of progressive/art rock that the genre is never going to die the death its critics, embracing prejudice as if a credential, have repeatedly and gleefully foretold.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only thing wrong with this album is that there is only one, April 19, 2010
This review is from: Parliament of Fooles (Audio CD)
This is one of those times when you finish the album and not only replay it but start looking for the next one.
