5.0 out of 5 stars The best I've used, November 30, 2010
This review is from: Parmak DF-SP-LI Solar Pak 6 Low Impedance 6-Volt Battery-Operated 25-Mile-Range Electric Fence Charger (Lawn & Patio)
I've used and gone through numerous solar fence chargers over the years, and none of them were of this quality. I've had this charger in place for over 28 days now, and due to its location, I can only get about 2-3 hours of sunlight per day. The charger is still reading good and I've seen it shock a cow or two recently. I couldn't be more pleased with the results. It's well made, and holds a charge longer than anything I've had before.

We've had this fencer for about 10 years now and it has been completely trouble-free. I couldn't be more pleased!

We have it installed on a wide tape fence, three "rails" covering about 5-6 acres, and there is plenty of juice from this charger for our horses.

This week I noticed that the battery does not seem to be holding a charge anymore, (after 10 years!) so I am looking to replace it, but it is still working for now (when there is enough light) until I get a new battery in a few days. Hopefully in the meantime the horses won't notice that it's not working at night or on really cloudy days.

The Parmak solar fence charger does a great job keeping my
horses safe. No electric power required and plenty of free
power from the sun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful, June 10, 2011

Love it! Works like a charm. I have three string polyrope horse fences and it keeps it fully charged. Great design and I would highly recommend. In fact I have to many of my Ranch owner friends. Make sure to have a great grounding system on any electric fence. Your fence is only as strong as your ground!

5.0 out of 5 stars Works surprisingly well!, September 1, 2011

I bought this to create a permanent paddock for 2 horses. The paddock is only about half an acre, however we wanted something with enough power to expand if necessary. You cannot have TOO much power - it will not harm your animals.

First thing I noticed is that the case of this charger is metal. Shocking(no pun intended), as every charger I have seen has had a plastic case that slowly deteriorates in the sun, gets brittle, and cracks. Hopefully, it will not rust out, but the paint coating seems heavy and has good coverage. The directions that come with the charger are pretty good, and give lots of tips on grounding. It also recommends to place the charger in sunlight for 5 days before using. But, like most people, I could not wait that long to use my new toy. I turned the knob to 'On' and it immediately jumped up to green and 'ticked' every second, as expected.

I was in a rush to install this paddock, so I only let it sit outside for about a day before permanently installing it on a 4x4 post. There are 2 keyholes in the back to hang it on some protruding screws. Our fence had a top row of 1/2" tape and then 3 rows of 12 gage galvanized wire.

Now, to grounding. This is the most important part of chargers and the part where people make the most mistakes and think their charger is 'broken.' The manual recommends 3 6-10 foot galvanized or copper stakes driven deep enough to hit wet dirt and 10 feet apart. Well...I live in Texas, and we are suffering one of the worst droughts in history. This paddock is also on the slope of a hill, where I am sure there is no water to speak of. I started with just a single 4 foot piece of rebar and drove it in almost all the way to the ground. Surprisingly, this was enough to get a great ground - my voltmeter was reading 6kV all around the paddock. Reader beware - It could be that I am only fencing in half an acre, and if I were to use the 25 miles that this charger is rated, I may not see the same results. In addition, the rebar WILL rust, and will eventually need to be replaced/upgraded, however I was in a rush and wanted to see if it would work before I bought 3 $40 copper rods from Tractor Supply.

Oh, and I guess the most important thing - does it work with horses? Well, the horses were in a very poorly maintained(not by us) electric paddock, and our mare learned that she could just go under/between the wire and escape as the fence wasn't always charged or was weak. Fence has been in for 3 weeks, we visit every other day, and we notice that they keep at least 6 feet distance from the fence. They were very wary to even approach us on the other side of the fence with treats, so I would say it works great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Shock some deer, April 14, 2011

Use this unit to keep deer out of my garden. Great for remote location that needs protection from deer.
Fence will have to be repaired when deer tear it down trying to get away from the shock.

We were so happy to use this for our over-sized garden. We liked the fact that it holds a charge for 15 days. It is keeping the earth greener. It is constructed much better than any of the ones we viewed at the stores. Lettuce be thankful.

I have been using a Parmak DF-SP-L1 Solar Pak for several years, and it has been trouble free ever since I owned it. I needed a new fence charger for another pasture and decided to stay with a charger I could depend on. I highly recommand this charger

I live in Maine and especially in winter we will have several cloudy days in a row. I have NEVER turned on this charger and had it less than a full charge. Never had issues with it grounding out, even when not set up properly (i.e., wrapped around a post instead of through an insulator). I am VERY happy with this product, so happy that I now own two.

I was able to purchase this product through amazon.com for $40 less than my local tack shop, where I purchased my first one.

I use this charger with 1 1/2 or 1" polytape. I absolutely recommend this product to anyone with equines.
