5.0 out of 5 stars Works great.
I purchased this Parmak Magnum 12volt solar fence charger for a pasture for a horse my wife bought at an auction. Closest access to electricity was over 500 feet away through the woods so solar made it simple. We used a 9 wire poly rope. The pasture is about 2 and a half acres. We installed the fence charger per the included directions. We used three 8 foot grounding rods...

We used three 8 foot grounding rods as suggested. This thing will knock your socks off and that was before we found a location where the poly rope/wire was shorting on a steel post because it did not get inserted into the plastic insulator clip. Now it is late summer and the grass has grown up and is touching the fence in some locations. The meter on the fence charger still show beyond the green (good). Our horse has never attempted to test the fence as far as I know. The neighbor now put a two year old palamino in our pasture for a companion for our horse. The two year old has never tested the fence as far as I know and he respects the fence. Never had either horse get out of the pasture. I think these 12 volt units perform better thatn the 6 volt units. This unit has exceeded my expectations as far as a solar fence charger goes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fencer, January 2, 2011
This review is from: Parmak Magnum 12 Solar Pak Low Impedance 12 Volt Battery Operated 30 Mile Range Electric Fence Charger MAG12SP (Lawn & Patio)
This fencer works GREAT!

I'm using this to fence in a 40 acre pasture. Much more efficient than my old unit. The main thing to remember when changing from the old "high impedence fencers" to the new "low impedence" fencers is that you need a much better ground system.

The old fencers that really threw a spark could get by with one ground rod. The new low impedence fencers recommend three ground rods hooked in a series. Anyone that tries to get by with one will either damage their fencer or be disappointed in the performance.

My experience totally opposite that of the other reviewer. Works great, maintains charge even if moderate grass/weeds present. I'm using it with electrobraid.

You can find it much cheaper elsewhere.

I am very pleased with the 12Volt Magnum Solar Charger that I ordered. Also pleased with the Transaction. I had an old Parmak Charger that was a good one, and that, and it being American made is why I bought another one. The Old one is about 15 years old and is still working good. Had to replace Batteries two or three times.

What you have to do is follow the instructions. You need three eight-foot long grounding rods, pounded into the ground and distanced from but connected to each other; and, of course, connected to the Magnum 12. I used four rods, just to be sure. Then I ran a wire from the "hot" Magnum 12 connection to the fence wire. Next, I let the thing sit with the switch turned off for about 10 days, because we were locked into a partly-sunny/partly-cloudy weather period. When I turned it on, it still only appeared to be about half-charged. But I knew it should be charged, so I checked the fence. And sure enough it was shorting out at one place. I corrected that and the charge indicator jumped like crazy to full charge. We've had a number of cloudy days since but the unit has stayed fully charged. And let me tell you, that thing will pop you a good one if you touch the wire. Now I have a critter-free garden and could not be more pleased.

4.0 out of 5 stars good pruduct besides intitial concerns, February 10, 2012

This review is from: Parmak Magnum 12 Solar Pak Low Impedance 12 Volt Battery Operated 30 Mile Range Electric Fence Charger MAG12SP (Lawn & Patio)
I've had this fence charger for a year now. I am overall satisfied with it's operation. It's compact and free to use. Initially, I had issue with the battery keeping up. I did as the directions instructed and put unit out in the sun (OFF) for the recommended days to charge. I then began it's use. The battery (meter) was strongest when turned on and then quickly fell towards the red part of the meter, although it did stay in the green. It was checked it with the appropriate fence meter and it was putting out 5 KV. I kept using the unit as I needed protection around a bee yard. 2-3 weeks later as I was checking the yard I noticed that the meter was pegged at the highest level in the green. Checking it with the fence meter it was putting out 9.5K. It remains at this level today. Due to this yards location, I'm not there everyday so grass does creep up into the fence with no change to the 9.5K output. Some final thoughts on my initial issue, when the unit was shipped from Amazon, it was ON (clicking inside the box)So the battery was already down before I got it. I also could have had better luck if I had charged battery with AC adapter before use. Overall, I'm satisfied with this product. I wrote this review as I am here to purchase a second one for another location.
