I consider Paolo Conte to be a master songwriter. Although I do not speak Italian (and I am sure his lyrics are extremely witty), I base my opinion entirely on his compositional skills. The way I got to him was first through the 2 Nonesuch retrospectives Best Of and Reveries and the 2 live albums Tournee 1 and Tournee 2. These albums should give you a good overview of what he does. But many of the songs on these Cds are re-interpretations of original recordings and I started to feel I needed to hear the original albums from which they came. Well worth the effort, there are many hidden gems on these records. All his 1980s albums are well worth checking out - Paris Milona (1981), Appunti di Viaggio (1982), Paolo Conte (1984) Aguaplano (2 cd version) (1988) and Parole d'Amore (1990). Pretty well all masterpieces.

This is a must have for any jazz lover!!!! For those that do not know who Paolo Conte is, it is an amazing discovery into a world of Jazz that has existed for quite some time. First and foremost, I love the piano arrangements. However, the addition of a low, jazzy, smokey voice, singing in Italian makes this entire album complete. If you can't understand Italian, don't worry, you don't need to. If you miss those musicians who feel like they carry jazz in their veins when they perform, buy this album. Paolo Conte has to be Italy's best kept secret when it comes to musicians; especially jazz musicians. And, just to add a bit of familiarity to the artist, I'm told that Paolo never liked to go anywhere on tour without his personal piano.
