No Android Phone Required

First, a bit of background...
I have an extensive 20+ year 12 volt background as a custom installer, salesperson, retail store owner, and wholesale sales rep. I've also been an avid Android user since the G1. That being said, I'm very impressed with the potential of this piece. Understand, the Asteroid is yet in the beginning stages of its development.

Build Quality.
The quality of craftsmanship is top-notch. The buttons and displays are very sharp and solid. The feel of the buttons remind me of a factory Mercedes Becker radio. Back lighting color and brightness are very appealing. The HD LCD panel is beautiful. Even the included USB GPS antenna is higher quality than any other I have seen. The Asteroid (as do most Parrot units) comes with a pre-terminated DIN harness that allowed me to plug directly into my Kia Forte with no wiring or adapter harness at all! This will not likely be the case for you, unless you have a Hyundai/Kia or German vehicle. The rotary volume is not the most comfortable to use, and there is no wireless remote or steering wheel control adapter available yet (they claim by the end of the year). That is my only hardware complaint.

Works wonderfully. Both phone and audio streaming are great. "Call Bill Smith mobile" I said, and instantly the pleasant voice said, "Calling Smith, Bill on mobile". Perfect! The call quality on my end is significantly better than the factory Kia Bluetooth, and on the other end it is 20 times better! The Asteroid builds it's own voice tags for each contact automatically, so you don't have to worry if your phone doesn't support voice tagging.

Down to one star for crashing TWICE with the v1.5 firmware with my friends in the truck. I returned it to the store as defective.

I've had this unit for 8 weeks and I'm going to continue looking for something else. It had the potential to be an outstanding product, but Parrot isn't getting behind their product. There seems to be only 1 or 2 developers fixing bugs and they aren't rushing anything. Parrot rarely participates in their own forums and complaints go basically ignored. Dozens of feature requests have been acknowledged, but only a few implemented with the latest software update in which it's been 4 months since the last one.

The Apps are a gimmick and don't do much. It seems Parrot only has several developers willing to create apps for it but they voiced their disappointment that this unit uses a very outdated version of Android and Parrot has no intention of updating it.

Basically I feel like I paid to continually beta test a product. That said, everything on this unit actually works as advertised until it locks up or suddenly reboots for no reason other than just listening to the radio.

Don't take my word for it, go visit the forums on their web site.

I actually bought this unit from Crutchfield because at the time, both, Amazon & Crutchfield were selling them for the same price- but Crutchfield includes free installation gear. The only real reason why I was even in the market for a new stereo was because some lowlife broke into my garage and stole my old Sony Radio with bluetooth.

Carrying around a CD this days seem rather antiquated, unless you're an absolute audiophile. For those that are not, in comes this stereo that pretty much lets you do it all- short of being able to watch videos on the screen. It has 4 USB ports which are intended to be used for the provided GPS antenna, your choice of USB broadband dongle (which is intended to be used with the USB extension cable) and finally you have one spare USB port for you to connect your preferred USB device (be warned, you will need to gain access to the rear of the stereo if you do not buy an additional USB extension cable. Also, from some brief web browsing, I'm given the impression that you can actually use a USB hub on this stereo unit, which would further expand your options. In addition to this you also have an additional SD card slot to be used for even further onboard music space.

Installation is pretty straight forward for my car... obviously YMMV. But do note that other than the standard installation of this stereo, you will be required to run & hide the cables for the GPS antenna (which is supposed to be mounted on your dash) and for the microphone as well (which is supposed to be installed near your rearview mirror or on your visor- I opted for the visor). Also, parrot made this unit with the intention of easing installation for those whose car's have ISO stereo harnesses.

I was looking for a replacement head unit for a new-to-me older Mercedes, and found the Asteroid by accident. I really didn't want one of the teeny-bopper neon day-glow powered silver head units - that would totaly clash with the interior, and the UI for those units just never seems to be useful and functional.

I picked up the Asteroid at a local retailer, sourced the line adapter and antenna adapter, and after reading instructions, checking wiring diagrams, had the basic install done in about an hour (turns out the ISO harness works out of the box with older MBs). I re-visited the install to finish running the Mic and GPS pod later, and am very happy with the cleanness of the unit, the install, and general functionality.

Audio quality is great- the built in processing includes "virtual bass enhancement", multi-band EQ, 3-level loudness, environmental volume adjustment, and fader controls. I was able to tether to my iPhone via bluetooth for Internet, but it appears that simulaneous bluetooth and iPod functionality from the same device are not possible (kind of makes sense). It took a couple of tries to sort the bluetooth streaming, but that now works great, even between ignition on/off/out of range activity cycles. I haven't played around much with the internal apps besides some of the streaming radio, so i can't offer much more feedback on that now.

Overall, I'm happy to have found a unit which looks decent and not overly teched-out, while still offering a feature set which matches what's offered in brand new cars. Looking forward to future software/feature upgrades and apps!

PS: The UART port on the back is planned to support CAN BUS steering wheel controls, but at the time of writing, looks like we're still waiting on that support.
