Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3 - Young readers will immediately be drawn to this book by the vivid, colorful illustrations created from fabrics, paints, ink, and paper. Combining elements of a trickster tale and a cumulative story, the rhyming narrative describes how Tico Tango makes his way through the rainforest, snatching a yellow lemon, a purple fig, a red cherry, and other vibrantly colored goodies from his animal friends. The text on each page becomes progressively longer, repeating each of the stolen treats that the parrot carries along with him before pilfering the next item. The words are placed on the left-hand side, and the rest of the spread is covered with a large, lively jungle scene that offers plenty of details for readers to explore. A fun read-aloud, this book could also be used to introduce rainforest plants and animals, as well as for a study of art techniques. - Anne L. Tormohlen, Deerfield Elementary School, Lawrence, KS

From Booklist

PreS-K. Set in the rain forest and illustrated in lush tropical colors, this funny, cumulative rhyme tells of a greedy parrot that grabs a delicious fruit from each of his friends, until he holds so much that he drops everything. Some of the handsome collage illustrations, created from fabrics, acrylics, paper, ink, and pastels, may be too packed for the young audience, but the pictures do capture the dramatic standoff as the parrot grabs a round, yellow mango from a frog; an orange papaya from a leopard; a sweet, purple fig from a monkey; and more and more, leaving each of his friends shocked, tearful, and angry. The cumulative rhyme is a funny way to show the greedy creature adding too much. Then comes a satisfying conclusion that leads to a feast of fruits for all. Hazel Rochman

5.0 out of 5 stars The Parrot Tico Tango, March 26, 2007

This review is from: The Parrot Tico Tango (Hardcover)
My 6 year old son is obsessed with this book. We originally took it out from the library. He insisted reading it every night until he could memorize it. He loved it so much we bought it for his birthday. He loves the rythm of the book, all the fruit and colors. He can read it on his own now and wants to take it to school to share with his class. It is also available in Spanish - I think I'd like to read that version as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice addition to my daughters library, July 6, 2008
This review is from: The Parrot Tico Tango (Paperback)
Cute book, nice rhyming, good moral lesson (don't take other people's stuff), overall a nice addition to my daughter's bookshelf. My daughter chants along by the time we reach the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Someone should write a song, October 20, 2009

This review is from: The Parrot Tico Tango (Paperback)
Our three-year old loves this book and so do we. The text is engaging and the beautiful illustrations compliment it perfectly. We love the end, which leaves children with a good message and motivates for further activity afterward (dancing). Someone should write a song to follow the story. And yes, The Parrot Tico Tango is a proof that the best books don't have to be the most expensive ones.
