Plain and Simple, Short and Sweet.,
By
This review is from: Parrots For Dummies (Paperback)
This is my first "for Dummies" book and I was extremely impressed with this text by Nikki Moustaki. She brings real life experience and knowledge and puts it plain and simple. Her real life stories are short and sweet, which is good, as I wanted a book to give me the details and the pros and cons on all aspects of parrot companionship. This book hits the nail on the head.
If your are considering purchasing a parrot, read this book. If you already own a parrot, read this book. If you're looking for cute candy coated stories on how wonderful parrot ownership is, without the "dark" side of it, this is not your book. Nikki Moustaki presents all sides of parrot ownership and lets you choose whether taking on a possible lifetime companion bird is right for you.

If you have any thoughts of owning a parrot or if you are an experienced parrot owner, you can't do without this Awesome Book of Knowledge on our feathered friends. Nikki Moustaki answered questions I didn't even know to ask! I've owned African Greys for several years and the book explained behavioral patterns and habits and how to deal with these so you get results that are great for you and your bird. It is packed full of excellent diet information that is invaluable for proper feeding and the health of your bird. YOU AND YOUR BIRD DESERVE THIS BOOK! THANK YOU NIKKI!

This book has some great information on the selection, care, feeding and health issues related to these wonderful birds. It is an excellent resource for the novice and the experienced parrot owner. The book contains very good illustrations for bird anatomy in addition to colorful pictures of a large variety of parrots.

No Longer Dummies,

This review is from: Parrots For Dummies (Paperback)
This book was written for us, my husband and me, as we were really dummies when it came to raising a parrot. We have learned so much from this book that we feel as if we may be prepared now to raise the Blue Fronted Amazon that we adopted.

This review is from: Parrots For Dummies (Paperback)
I am really impressed with this book. As the new mom of a Blue & Gold Macaw I have been reading everyting I can get my hands on. By far this is the most generally informative book that covers all aspects of parrot ownership. I would certainly recommend this as the first book you buy for your collection

I was very disappointed in this title. I've been building a small library of books on parrots and parrot care and Ms. Moustaki was a new author for me, so I was hoping for some new perspectives. Unfortunately, I am afraid the more I read, the less credible I found the material to be. "...for Dummies" usually does better than that. I can definitely recommend Gary Gallerstein's comprehensive The Complete Pet Bird Owner's Handbook and that would be a far better purchase than this for a new parrot owner.
My chief complaint with this book is that the author does not distinguish between established fact and personal opinion. I find this particularly offensive in a reference work, especially one which makes sweeping statements about what is safe and healthy for a creature as decidedly vulnerable as a pet parrot. I don't mind an author stating opinion or personal experience, but I like to know when something has been established as fact through careful research work or through scientific process and when it is just the author's personal take. Add that to a bias towards "if it is natural it must be safe/better" and my fluff alarms start to go off. I got rather irritated and agitated reading this, and I might actually consign it to the recycle bin rather than Goodwill as I actually think in the wrong hands it could be worse than nothing. Yeah, not every sentence in the book is wrong, it's just that so many are kinda on the edge, the signal to noise ratio is way down. I just can't recommend this book. And I probably will be avoiding this author.

This book provided me with what I expected--good information about parrots. It started out with more information than it finsihed with (wish it had provided the same throughout) but I am overall satisfied.

I loved this book,
This review is from: Parrots For Dummies (Paperback)
I found Parrots For Dummies to be an excellent resource. It's a larger book than most, well put together and well organized - full of useful inoformation on all aspects of keeping parrots.
I was very pleased to find that it discusses the pros and cons of wing clipping to help an owner to decide what is best for their bird. So far, it is the only parrot book I have seen to do a good job of that. |
