5.0 out of 5 stars Why does this sound portisheady?
While visiting Toronto I walked into an indy music store and this Baxter Dury CD was in rotation. The 2nd song on the CD, Oscar Brown caught me off guard with it's haunting and loose reference to the Velvet Undergrounds song 'O! sweet nuthin'. After listinging to first 3 tracks, the CD was already rated a MUST have. This is a decision I have not regreted...

3.0 out of 5 stars low liftoff
a very nice mellow album with fragile whispery melodies that float along a bed of light and airy music. while this album is not what i would consider a timeless masterpiece, it's still a pretty solid record and a recommendation for fans of The Clientele and the Out Of Season album by Beth Gibbons and Rustin' Man.

The sound of the CD is haunting and beautiful, much like Portishead but still maintaining a very unique sound. Looking into the liner notes, the link between Baxter Dury and Portishead becomes clear. Geoff Barrow, and Adrian Utley accompany many of the tracks on this CD. Having also been involved in a 2002 release of Beth Gibbons solo project with Paul Webb (Talk Talk), you may see the Baxter Dury CD and the Gibbons Rustin' Man CD 'Out Of Season' displayed together.

5.0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS, February 13, 2003

I heard the single Oscar Brown and bought the CD the next day. If you are fans of Air or Modest Mouse you'll enjoy this. This is a cd where you can press play and listen all the way through without skipping tracks. Being the son of a musician he can hold his own anytime. Hopefully there will be more to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars an unexpected gem, February 12, 2003
By A Customer
This album has a lot of appealing qualities: It's both introspective and arresting; a slowed-down, tripped-out soundscape. Baxter Dury croons with confidence, aided by some hauntingly lush female vocals on many of the tracks. It sounds like Portishead through an aural kaleidoscope. It's a distant, dreamy record, perfect for weekend mornings and quiet nights.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing, January 3, 2004

Over the span of my life i've encountered very few albums which i honestly thought were amazing. there's a lot of "good" or "really great" stuff out there, but "amazing" is hard word to get out of me when describing music -- maybe it's because i'm a musician myself, but this is a review of a cd, not an analysis of my self -- Len Parrot's Memorial Lift is truly an amazing album. I compare its majesty to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon and Radiohead's OK Computer. Every song is filled with wonder and the music is so delicate that every chord seems like it's hanging on its own fragile vine on a windy day. This album is good medicine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, December 6, 2005

I have owned this album for a few months now and it still is in very high rotation. It starts off really good and maintains it's quality. The songs that are alright at first definetley grow onto you, very nice and mellow, ends perfectly with the instrumental close to "boneyard dogs."

5.0 out of 5 stars a near perfect....late discovery, December 5, 2005

This was playing in a second hand record store in Long Beach. 3 tracks in I asked for the copy. The Portishead connection makes a lot of sense now. Fans of the more mushroomy Flaming Lips, Grandaddy and Pink Floyd will feel very comfortable here too. Very ethereal but surprisingly dry production wise in some spots. Dury was very smart in allowing Johanna Hussey to coat this album in her dainty vocals. This is album will be with me forever. It's that strong.
