Editorial Reviews

Marshalling orchestral and choral forces under the direction of Tonu Kaljuste, this new Arvo Part album, produced by Manfred Eicher and realized, like all Part s ECM discs, with the composers participation, is a major event. Sacred music predominates, by turns monumentally powerful and tenderly fragile. Compositions featured, in premiere recordings made in Tallinns Niguliste Church, are: Adams Lament for choir and string orchestra; Beatus Petronius for two choirs, eight woodwind instruments, tubular bells and string orchestra; Salve Regina for choir, celesta and string orchestra; Statuit ei Dominus for two choirs, woodwinds and string orchestra; Alleluia-Tropus for choir and string orchestra; LAbbe Agathon for soprano, baritone, female choir and string orchestra. The album concludes with two lullabies Estonian Lullaby and Christmas Lullaby for female choir and string orchestra. In title piece Adams Lament Part uses a poetic text by Silouan of Athos to emphasize our common heritage in the figure of Adam. Adam is all of us who bear his legacy. This Total Adam has been suffering and lamenting for thousands of years on Earth. Adam himself, our primal father, foresaw the human tragedy and experienced it as his personal guilt. He has suffered all human cataclysms, unto the depths of despair.

I think you will enjoy this powerful music.

The music is often spare and halting with silences and pauses where the reverberation and echoes linger in an almost mystical way.

Having been appointed a member of the Pontifical Council for Culture by the incumbent pope, Arvo Pärt's decision to remain firmly on the path of sacramental music, particularly in the religious choral tradition, comes as little surprise. Adam's Lament is a testament to the unthinkable remorse and destitution that the first man on earth experienced after being banished from the Garden of Eden by his omnipotent creator. In accordance with the devotional themes that run through the heart of Pärt's back-catalog, the famed Estonian composer has pulled inspiration on this occasion from the writings of Silouan the Athonite, a Russian Orthodox monk writing in the late 19th and early 20th Century. A thought-provoking character, Silouan left his homeland to become an ascetic in Greece, where he wrote on a number of devout subjects. Perhaps most notably is his take on Adam's unequivocal despair and his incarnation as a symbol for humanity's fall from grace, which Pärt, in accordance with the Catholic doctrine, interprets as a representation of both mankind as a whole and Adam as an individual.

A deep and profound synergy emerges as a consequence; the use of a choir to express this dual understanding resonates by its very virtue as a collective body, while simultaneously inducing gracious ease and gratifying meditation through expansive consonance and frequent sforzando. The Latvian Radio Choir, Vox Clamantis, and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir achieve this with incredible dexterity throughout the album, which also shoulders wearisome moments that swirl and meander in the daunting lengths that some of these pieces encompass.

Any music by Arvo Pärt is stunning. He is truly a composer ahead of his time, and one that people will more and more realize how important his work is. This music is so full of 'space' and time. Hard to describe but utterly sacred and powerful. Highly recommended!

I had the good fortune to have performed Adam's Lament twice and the Salve Regina and Estonian Lullaby once over the past several years with a very good city chorus. Adam's Lament is a masterful work with remarkable music that 'inhabits' and expresses the powerful emotional content of the text. The music is often spare and halting with silences and pauses where the reverberation and echoes linger in an almost mystical way. As a counterpoint to the sections with the chorus in full voice, full of dissonance and driving tempos, the work is dramatic and moving. This recording is wonderful. The interpretation is right on and the resonant sound of the recording - so essential to this work which can sound disjointed and without continuity if the venue is too dry - is ideal. The Salve Regina, performed with precision and intensity, is an absolute joy. As far as I'm concerned, this recording is richly rewarding and will be the reference against which all others will be compared.

Arvo Part is a major contemporary composer from Estonia, who exemplifies the love of music in his country. The music is soaring and gripping.
